Why Is My TinyURL Link Redirecting to a Different Page? (Affiliate Link)

If your TinyURL link is sending people to a homepage, an ad, or a 404 error page instead of your intended destination, the cause is usually automatic link affiliationnot a broken link. This is a common question for e-commerce and affiliate marketers/websites, and this article explains what’s happening and how to prevent it.

The Short Answer

In most cases, there’s nothing wrong with your TinyURL link—it’s working as designed and still points to the destination you set. The unexpected redirect is almost always caused by a third-party ad-blocker interfering with an affiliated link.

What Is Automatic Link Affiliation?

TinyURL has partnered with Sovrn Commerce to automatically add affiliate tracking to commercial links across our platform. This applies to:

  • Guest users (links created without signing in), and
  • Free account users

When a commercial or shopping link is shortened, it may be automatically converted into an affiliate link behind the scenes. Your short link still points to the same destination—but the affiliate layer is where redirect problems can appear.

Why the Link Sends People to the Wrong Page

Your TinyURL link is still trying to reach the correct destination. However, when a link has been automatically affiliated, an ad-blocker or privacy extension on the visitor’s device may block the affiliate tracking. When that happens, instead of reaching your intended page, the visitor may be redirected to:

  • The homepage of the destination site,
  • An advertised or promotional page, or
  • A 404 “page not found” error.

So the misdirect isn’t caused by your link being broken—it’s the ad-blocker interrupting the affiliate step in the middle.

How to Prevent This

You have two options to stop your links from being automatically affiliated:

Option 1: Upgrade your plan (recommended)

  • Upgrading to at least the Pro 125 plan removes automatic affiliation from your links, so they redirect cleanly to your destination without an affiliate layer that ad-blockers can interfere with. See our Plan Options page for details.

Option 2: Disable the feature

  • You can also turn off automatic affiliation by clicking the ‘Affiliate Link’ text in your dashboard (https://tinyurl.com/app/affiliate-link). If you’ve already done this, new links you create will no longer be affiliated going forward.

Comparing Plans

Not sure which plan fits your needs? Visit our Plan Options page to compare what each plan offers.

On that page, use the sliders and toggles to compare:

  • Volume — how many links you need per month
  • Pricing — the cost at each tier
  • Billing frequency — monthly vs. annual
