Up to this point, we haven't seen more variants from the use of
similar anti-viral COVID-19 medications such as Gilead's remdesivir
because the latter has to be given with close MD supervision as an
infusion in the hospital so that both dose & duration ensure that
mutations happen at a rate sufficient to destroy all the viruses in a
patient so that none escape to infect others.

Without MD supervision, COVID-19 infected people will share their
molnupiravir pills (i.e. not take enough), stop taking them when they
feel better (i.e. not take them for long enough), won't wear their
masks, won't self-quarantine, and may even march to protest vaccine
mandates.

Bottom line:

The COVID-19 pandemic is likely to get worse as more variants emerge
that are possibly more deadlier and more infectious as they start

I would have assumed a theraputic would, in fact, be a lot harder for the virus
to evolve it's way past than a vaccine. In fact it's probably worth trying
against _every_ troublesome coronavirus because it screws up things they all
have in common. Furthermore selection pressure would presumably be less for
something that doesn't affect transmission.

It's not an alternative to vaccination, it's a second line of defence.

I'm slightly worried by the information than its effect is mutagenic. Is there
not a possibility of accelerated evolution?

What is being observed is that variants (i.e. Alpha through Delta) of
SARS-CoV-2 have been mutation-driven.
It is being tried and has been tried against other viruses and even
with SARS-CoV-2 is only about 50% effective which does mean the virus
is already able to escape treatment half the time and emerge with many
more mutations because of the anti-viral.
Mutations can affect transmission as evident by the mutated Delta

It's not a defense (i.e. it does not prevent infection).

Vaccination/immunity is actually the last line of defence.

The first line of defense is social distancing. The second line of
defense is the COVID-mask. Once the virus attaches to our cells via

be a breakthrough infection.
