VPLEX Metro Express Edition (VMEE)

VPLEX Metro Express Edition (VMEE)

VPLEX Metro has proven itself as the technology of choice for larger mid-market and enterprise organisations who have a requirement for true active-active, distributed datacenter infrastructures.

VPLEX Metro Express Edition takes exactly the same, proven VPLEX  technologies and use cases, and packages them into a cost effective solution, that also includes RecoverPoint CDP.  It is positioned for either, smaller mid-market organisations who want to leverage the benefits of an active-active architecture, or for larger organisations who want to deploy VPLEX Metro for specific application use-cases or as a foundation for a larger VPLEX deployment.

It includes everything needed to build a two-site VPLEX Metro configuration for up to 40 TB of usable capacity, including:-

  • Two VPLEX VS2 Single Engine Rackable Clusters, each with two VPLEX Directors for resilience within each site.
  • VPLEX GeoSynchrony Base and 40TB Licenses
  • VPLEX Metro Base and 40TB Licenses
  • RecoverPoint EX CDP 40TB Licenses (no RPAs included)

You can upgrade VMEE up to 80TB and then non-disruptively move into standard VPLEX licensing, likewise if you wish to expand the engines in a cluster you can non-disruptively upgrade to a standard VPLEX license.

Like VPLEX, the primary use cases for VPLEX Metro Express Edition are:-

VPLEX Metro Express Edition also includes a license to use RecoverPoint CDP to enable any point in time recovery from corruption.

  • imageLocal corruption protection and data recovery with DVR-like rollback.
  • Define and enforce custom recovery point objectives and service level agreements.
  • Target LUNs can be repurposed for a variety of uses, including backup and database reporting.

Best of all is that VMEE is not specific to EMC storage, VMEE can be purchased for use with any third party fibre channel storage array that is on the VPLEX support matrix and this currently includes,

HDS VSP, HDS USP-V/VM, HDS USP, HDS AMS2xxx, SUN Storage 99xx, NetApp FAS/V 3xxx/6xxx, IBM DS8xxx, IBM DS4800, IBM DS4700, IBM DS5300, XIV, SVC , 3PAR. HP P9500, HP XP 48/128/512/1K/12K/20K/24K, HP EVA 4/6/8000, HP EVA 4/6/8100, HP EVA 4/6/8400, Fujitsu Eternus DX8x00, 8000 M1200/M2200; DX440/DX410, 4000M600, DX440S2/DX410S2.

This means than anyone with two fibre channel datacenters, connected with either FC or IP, with a RTT < 5ms (100-200KM) and enough bandwidth to sustain synchronous replication can cost-effectively benefit from the use of EMC VPLEX.

Cost effectiveness is the name of the game here, we know that our prospective customers get the benefits of the true active/active VPLEX architecture, but in many cases organisations were forced into ‘good enough’ solutions because of budget constraints. VMEE will mean that many more mid-market organisations with an environment suitable for distributed datacenters will be able to deploy and benefit from EMC VPLEX technology.
