Rosa Flinton-Brown named BCHF 1st vice president

Rosa Flinton-Brown, who is the BCHF’s treasurer, has agreed to wear another hat, taking on the role of first vice president. Agreeing to do so puts Rosa in line to become the BCHF’s president in 2022, for which we owe her a huge thanks in advance! However, it also means we will need to find a new treasurer next year.

Langley Heritage Society sponsors Salishan Place classrooms

The Langley Heritage Society is sponsoring the classroom spaces at Salishan Place by the River, the new arts, culture and heritage centre under construction in Fort Langley. This sponsorship will benefit students of all ages using the new facility when it opens in 2023.

The Maritime Museum of British Columbia is moving to a new interim home beside the Victoria Conference Centre, while the museum continues its drive to secure a permanent home on the water in downtown Victoria.

Nanaimo Historical Society speaker series available online

COVID 19 prevented the Nanaimo Historical Society from meeting in person for more than a year. However since September, the society has conducted virtual meetings that included a business meeting and a presentation by one or more speakers. These presentations are available on the Society’s YouTube channel

Roedde House Museum hosts postcard exhibit

Until Sept. 30, Roedde House Museum in Vancouver hosts Wish You Were Here, an exhibition about communication, connection, and the postcard.

Province announces project funding for 150th

Indigenous communities, local governments and heritage organizations in BC  will soon have access to a new funding source. The new, $30-million 150 Time Immemorial grant program will fund projects that educate people about BC’s colonial past, advance reconciliation and promote inclusivity and diversity.

BC Archives reference room services resume

As pandemic restrictions loosen, the BC Archives is introducing additional access to reference room resources, including increased researcher capacity, access to finding aids and card catalogues, microfilm retrieval and return, on-demand record retrievals, and consultations with a reference archivist.

Victoria council approves Northern Junk redevelopment

A plan to redevelop the Northern Junk warehouses in Victoria and build additional storeys above them has narrowly won city council approval, despite the objections of heritage advocates.

Vernon’s Caetani House opens to the public

Caetani House in Vernon, built in 1895 and once owned by the late Canadian artist Sveva Caetani is now offering guided tours of its artifacts, memorabilia and Caetani’s artwork.

Know History hosting Renaming and Reconciliation workshop

Know History’s free webinar series is part of an ongoing response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. At this session the speakers are Edna Elias, commissioner of Nunavut from 2010-15 and Tom Van Dewark, public historian and director of Know History’s western operations. They will provide historical perspective on the long legacy of naming and renaming places in Canada.

New pocket gallery exhibition reclaims BC Black history

At a time when many British Columbians are already re-examining the province’s history and who gets to write it, the BC Black History Awareness Society and Royal BC Museum have partnered to produce a new pocket gallery exhibition that reclaims and retells the complicated history of Black British Columbians.

The Royal BC Museum had a positive response after asking for help identifying a series of photos in a box labelled “Brentwood Bay.” Pictured above is Thomas Blake Glover, a Scottish merchant who moved to Japan in 1859 to manage the newly established Nagasaki office of a British trading house.

Nanaimo man donates massive mollusk collection to UBC

A man who has collected 140,000 mollusk specimens is donating them to the University of British Columbia’s Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Bill Merilees, a retired BC Parks employee, has been collecting them in earnest since 1978. 

Princeton Traditional Music Festival returns

Jon Bartlett and Rika Ruebsaat, guest editors of the fall issue of British Columbia History, have announced that the 13th annual Princeton Traditional Music Festival will take place Aug. 20-22. Last year’s festival was cancelled.

Wagon Road North back in print

Victoria-based book publishing company, Heritage House Publishing, is releasing a newly revised and updated edition of Wagon Road North: The Saga of the Cariboo Gold Rush, the first book the company published. This now-classic pictorial account of the Cariboo Gold Rush trail was first published in 1960 by Art Downs.
