RHS Award of garden merit
A very fine tree with beautiful, soft, downy, large leaves. The Foxglove-like flowers appear in spring and although fairly hardy throughout the British Isles, the buds are formed in autumn and can be damaged by late frosts. An excellent use of this plant is the production of "stooled" specimens giving perhaps the most magnificent of all foliage dot plants. All growth is cut down to ground level each March and the resultant suckers reduced to a single shoot. The result is a strong, erect growth rising to 10ft and bearing huge and handsome leaves, producing a most striking effect. Very easy from seed. 40ft (12m)

    Paulownia tomentosa

    Extremely slow to sprout

    Reviewed by Brian on

I sowed these in a propagator in early March in the described needed conditions. 2 seeds in total sprouted and both now in mid June are not 1 cm tall yet is this normal?

Thank you very much for taking the time to review 962, Paulownia tomentosa. We have tried emailing you directly and writing to you by letter to discuss this further but sadly have not received a response. We are of course disappointed to hear that these have been slower to germinate than expected but also for the unexpected low germination rate. We would like to look into this further and log your comments against your order for our records and for monitoring. We pride ourselves in only stocking the freshest of harvests and most are tested by our growers before being sent to us to ascertain a proven rate of germination. May we ask if the whole packet of seeds were sown? Would it be possible to send us a photograph of the seedlings, for us to try and identify to confirm if they are in fact Paulownia or if something else in the compost may have germinated instead and the Paulownia seeds are dormant? We look forward to hearing from you.

    Germination Instructions

Sow indoors at any time. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Place in a propagator, ideal temp. 18-20°C. Do not exclude light. Germination takes 21-60 days approx. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on under glass for their 1st winter. acclimatise and plant out the following spring.

    Growing Instructions

Prefers any fertile, humus-rich soil in full sun. Young trees will require protection from frost. The plant can be coppiced or stooled. To do this cut all foliage down to ground level in March, reduce the resultant suckers to a single shoot. This allows the stem to grow to 3M in one season and offers wonderful foliage. Otherwise can be grown as a tree.

    Cultivation Instructions

For tree growth, pruning group 1. No routine pruning necessary. Prune if needed in late winter or early spring. After pruning mulch and feed. For coppicing or stooling use pruning group 7. You need to wait until the plant is established, 2-3 years before you start hard pruning. Cut back to 5-8cm from ground level in March, just before the leaves appear on the stems.
