To celebrate his first year at the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE), Commissioner of Education Jason E. Glass returned to his alma mater, Meade County High School, on Sept. 17 to co-teach 9th-grade science with Jonathan Mangin.
“There was an attempt to teach me mathematics in the very same room we are working in today,” he told students. “This was my 4th-grade classroom and I emphasize there was an attempt because I struggled with it.”

In preparation for the upcoming School Report Card data release, Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) officials met with the School Curriculum Assessment and Accountability Council (SCAAC) to discuss the spring 2021 Kentucky Summative Assessment (KSA).
Through a waiver from the U.S. Department of Education, KDE’s spring 2021 testing plan included flexible test windows, a reduction in the time for assessment administration, where possible, and the opportunity to bring in small groups of full-time virtual students for an in-person assessment.

Today, Sept. 22, 2021, a fellow student of mine was killed and another injured as they waited for their bus to go to school.
First and foremost, my deepest condolences are with the loved ones of Tyree Smith and of those who were injured. The events that occurred this morning radiated throughout the halls of our school. It was a moment where our students were able to empathize with victims of violence.
Kentucky was saddened by the news today and our school community heard from so many across the state who shared our grief and prayers for the families. But those affected need to receive one of our most genuine forms of empathy, and that’s through advocacy.
