Tributes flood in for ‘proud’ Cavan man who died suddenly en-route to son’s wedding

TRIBUTES have flooded in for a "proud" Irishman who tragically passed away while travelling to his son's wedding.

Sean Mc Mahon, 61, was en-route to the Philippines when he suddenly fell ill on August 5.

The Cavan native emigrated to Queens in New York in 1984, where he joined the Carpenters Union for the City of NY.

Sean was also a long-time member of the Cavan P&B Association.

As part of the group, he proudly carried the banner up New York’s famous 5th Ave at the St. Patrick's Day Parade, for the past 31 years.

Sean is predeceased by his parents Dolly and Ned, sister Sadie and brother Nobby.

He is sadly missed by his loving wife, Kathleen McMahon, son Matthew McMahon, daughter Alanna McMahon, son in law Stephen McGonnell, daughter in law Mechelene,

Sean also has five sisters, Mary Cullivan, Kathleen Conaty, Evelyn Jermyn, Marcella O'Brien, Siobhan Niland and a brother Malachy.

He will be dearly missed by his sisters in law, brothers in law, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.

Unfortunately, the late carpenter was also just weeks away from becoming a grandfather to the unborn Sadie McGonnell.

Sean's family have also given a special mention to all the medical personnel on PAL Flight 127 and medical staff in Manila, Philippines Airport who tended to their dear husband and father.

'A PROUD CAVAN MAN'

Cavan P&B Association President Michael O'Reilly paid tribute to the late Mr Mahon, who according to the president, was a “big man with an even bigger heart”.

Speaking to the Anglo Celt, he said: “The Cavan Association of New York remembers with great fondness Sean McMahon who passed away recently.

"Sean was a big man with an even bigger heart. He proudly carried our Banner up Fifth Avenue on St Patrick's Day for 31 years.

"In New York he was known to many as ‘Sean the Carpenter’. He was quiet, happy and always a pleasure to be with.

"Above all else he was a proud Cavan man. He will be sorely missed by our Association.”

They Cavan P&B Association extended their sympathies to his bereaved family and friends.

Sean will repose in Blackbull Saturday August 20 from 5.00pm until 9.00pm, with removal on Sunday at 12.30pm to St Matthew's Church, Crosskeys for Requiem Mass at 1.00pm.

Interment afterwards will take place in the adjoining cemetery.
