These lessons are a great oppportunity for students to have fun while learning to be water safe and learning to swim. For students from Years 3 - 6 it is a way to practise the different strokes and diving before the swimming carnival in Week 10.   All students will leave school in their swiiming gear and will return to school to get changed.  They will be catching the bus to and from John Paul College with their classroom teachers.

Permission notes and medical forms were sent home last week with students.  Invoices were emailed.  Please check your child's bag if you have not received them yet.  If you have misplaced your form please contact your child's classroom teacher.

Wonderful writing in Prep P

It is crazy to think we are in week 6 of Term 4.  Prep P are very excited to be showing how clever we are during our assessment tasks this week but we are also a little nervous as we only have 4 weeks left of being a Preppie.  We have learned our letters and sounds and now we are using sight words, blends and digraphs to write full sentences!  We are working on spelling, sounding out, writing our letters correctly and remembering our finger spaces AND punctuation.  Check out our photos!

News from 3/4H

Published by Daisy Hill State School

The students have been loving working on Soundwaves during our visits to the computer labs!  They are working hard to sound out and segment their words each week.

Thank you Parents and Guardians for sending in the cereal boxes. This was greatly appreciated.  Year 4 students have been busy designing and creating their English and Media Arts assessments.  They are looking fabulous.  Students will be persuading their target audience to buy their product next week.

Year 3s are now presenting their poems this week.  They’ve been working very hard with their rhythmic pattern and rhyme.

Please ensure students are at school on time every day over the next two weeks, for full days, as we will be assessing across all curriculum areas through their culminating activities.  There is still much to get through.

 SWIMMING

Thank you to those who have already returned the permission for swimming and the medical forms.  Would you kindly forward the completed forms in at your earliest convenience.

LASTLY – Water bottles and hats.

Currently, the days are hot and humid.  Please ensure all students have water bottles EVERY day and their hats.

6D News

Published by Kathlyn Dyer

Year 6 have been busy over the last week or so preparing their graduation song.  They sound wonderful!

We are currently working in small groups to create a dance that tells a story.  The students have been really enjoying this task.  In HASS this week the students had to survery 5 people about the Great Barrier Reef and we found some interesting answers.

We are well on our way with assessment tasks and these will continue for the next week or so.

We have found great success in class with the use of the new card system.  Inappropriate language results in a green warning card, then repeated language is given a yellow card (10 minutes at break with the teacher) and a red card is applied for a repeat offence and results in a visit to the office and a consequence. There has been a huge improvement in the kind of language used in the classroom.  I am very proud of Year 6!

Prep/1S News

This semester in HASS students have been identifying, representing and describing the features of familiar places, and suggesting ways to care for special places.  Prep/1S have learned that the features of places can be natural, managed or constructed.  Students have had fun representing different places and their features in a variety of ways, such as, using plasticine, Lego, kinetic sand and drawing maps.

Poetry coming alive in 1H

Published by Nicole Huth

This term 1H have brought their poetry to life. They learned how to use Book Creator on the iPads to create an online and interactive book.

To create the books they used:

Chatterpix - another app to give a voice to photos

Video - They had to project their voices and use some actions to present their poem

Camera - Understanding the focus point to take photos of their poem.

And they spent time learning about Book Creator to bring it all together using imagination and creativity.  1H have had a great time learning with technology and have gained some skills to use their creativity.

We are very fortunate here at DHSS to have beautiful green spaces to consolidate our learning.  This term in Maths we have been learning about capacity.  Using a large water tray and measuring items we compared and ordered the size of containers based on their capacity.  We estimated and described the result using capacity terms, for example: The cup holds four scoops.  Learning in our outdoor environment is a powerful way for children to explore the curriculum and to do what kids do best – make a mess.

Creating Imaginative Texts

Students have been working hard on writing their narrative in English.  We've taken a character from a familiar story (Lucy Goosey) and created a new story.  Enjoy a sneak peek at their creative work:

Alexandra

Her new home was beautiful. It had a waterfall and there were tall gum trees all around. She had already made a really nice friend.
-- Alexandra

Hannah

Then she looked around for her mum. She was white as snow and as soft as a pillow.

Lincoln

Lucy's heart was beating as fast as a cheetah as she left the pond.
