In May 2008, an Argentinian, Eleuterio Sorio, was jailed for 16 years, having kept his young daughter a sexual prisoner while fathering two children with her. When she became pregnant with the first child in 1993 at age 13, her mother left their abode in Buenos Aires with her five other children. On the occasions Sorio’s daughter fled the home, she was forced to return by her father threatening her children, often at gunpoint. Maria Leuzzi, representing a local service for rape victims reflected on a reality that cases like Eleuterio Sorio’s are not uncommon, saying,“Here we have many Josef Fritzls”(Metro, 2008). Josef Fritzl achieved global notoriety in 2008 when it was discovered that he had imprisoned his already sexually and physically abused teenage daughter, Elisabeth, in a locked cellar beneath his family home for 24 years. He produced seven incestuously fathered children, one of whom died as a baby, with Fritzl incinerating the body in a furnace. If ongoing incestuous abuse can go on indefinitely in the house of an outwardly friendly man like Josef Fritzl (Marsh & Pancevski, 2009) who appeared to a neighbor to have a “perfect family unit”, then there must be many other cases.
