  At 14:30 ET (18:30 GMT), Brent oil futures fell 0.6% to $87.86 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 0.9% to $81.93 a barrel.
  U.S. crude output in biggest monthly jump since October 2021
  U.S. crude production rose to 13.15 million barrels per day in February, from 12.58 million bpd in January, marking the largest monthly increase since October, the Energy Information Administration said Monday.
  The jump in output comes ahead of fresh domestic weekly crude inventory data. The American Petroleum Institute is scheduled to release its latest estimate of weekly crude inventories later in the session.
  The EIA will release official petroleum data on Wednesday.
  Netanyahu vows to proceed with Rafa attack amid ongoing Israel-Hamas ceasefire hopes
  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that Israel will move ahead with an attack of the southern Gaza city of Rafah whether a ceasefire deal is struck with Hamas or not. An invasion of Rafa risks stoking further geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that could lead to a disruption in oil supplies.
  Media reports said that Israel had offered a 40-day ceasefire offer to Hamas in exchange for the return of hostages and displaced families begin allowed back into northern Gaza. It also includes new wording intended to satisfy Hamas’ need for a permanent ceasefire.
  
  The Hamas delegation left Cairo, and will return with a written response to the proposal, reports said.
  Peace talks between Israel and Hamas have repeatedly fallen through in recent months, with Hamas stating that it will not accept any proposal short of a permanent ceasefire.
  Fed meeting, interest rate policy in focus
  Oil prices were also pressured by a stronger dollar following data showing an increase in labor costs that threatens to boost inflation and keep U.S. interest rates higher for longer.
  The central bank kicked off its two-day meeting Tuesday and is widely expected to keep rates steady on Wednesday. But any signals on future rate cuts will be watched, especially as traders have largely priced out the prospect of early rate cuts in 2024.
  Markets fear that higher-for-longer rates will pressure the global economy and in turn dent oil demand this year.
  G7 agrees to end coal use in power generation
  In other news, energy ministers from the Group of Seven major democracies agreed on Tuesday to end the use of coal in power generation "during the first half of (the) 2030s", according to an official communique.
  However, in a caveat, the statement included an alternative goal of phasing out coal-fired power plants "in a timeline consistent with keeping a limit of a 1.5°C temperature rise within reach, in line with countries' net-zero pathways".

  Brent crude futures dipped 10 cents, or 0.11%, to $88.30 a barrel at 0423 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures slipped 13 cents, or 0.16%, to $82.50 a barrel.
  The front-month contract of both benchmarks lost more than 1% on Monday.
  "The ongoing negotiation for a potential ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has led market participants to further unwind the geopolitical risk premium in oil prices, while the upcoming Fed meeting also drives some near-term reservations," said Yeap Jun Rong, market strategist at IG.
  "Rates being kept at elevated levels for longer could trigger a further rise in the U.S. dollar, while also putting some risks to oil demand outlook."
  Hamas negotiators left Cairo late on Monday to consult with the group's leadership after talks with Qatari and Egyptian mediators on a response to a phased truce proposal that Israel presented on the weekend.
  The delegation was expected to report back within two days, two Egyptian security sources said.
  While Hamas leaders visited Cairo, Israeli airstrikes killed dozens of Palestinians on Monday, with more than half the dead in the southern Gaza city of Rafah, which foreign leaders have urged Israel not to invade.
  Continued attacks by Yemen's Houthis on maritime traffic south of the key Suez Canal trading route have kept a floor under oil prices and could prompt higher risk premiums if players anticipate crude supply disruptions.

  Houthis targeted two U.S. destroyers and the vessel Cyclades in the Red Sea as well as the MSC Orion in the Indian Ocean, the Iran-aligned group's military spokesman Yahya Sarea said in a televised speech early on Tuesday.
  On the economic front, investors are on watch this week for the U.S. Federal Reserve's May 1 policy review, with stubborn inflation pushing out market expectations for any rate cuts, which could bolster the U.S. dollar and hamper oil demand.
  Some investors are cautiously pricing a higher probability that the Fed could hike interest rates by a quarter percentage point this year and next as inflation and the labor market remain resilient.
  Additionally, concerns over demand have also weighed on sentiment, ANZ analysts said in a research note, as premiums for diesel and heating oil over crude oil have fallen to their lowest level in months.

Read more Reports on what authors like to call the end of the oil era were a frequent reading some 20 years ago. At the time, the focus was peak supply and the consequent need to find alternatives to the fuel that powers the world.
  
  Now, 20 years later, there is once again a surge in reports and analyses predicting the end of the oil era. This time, however, they focus on the death of demand driven by alternative sources of energy. And the world’s biggest oil-producing group has had enough.
  
  In an op-ed for the Middle East Economic Survey last week, OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais called on those predicting the end of oil to take it a bit easier because these predictions could be dangerous—especially since oil demand is very much not declining as the predictions say.
  
  “Such assertions, despite all evidence to the contrary, are all the more dangerous given their potential to foster energy policies that stoke energy chaos,” Al Ghais said, citing a report by the Economist on, as he put it, “the end of oil.”
  
  Interestingly enough, the Economist has published several articles recently on the topic of peak oil in evidence of the importance of the topic and, perhaps more importantly, the importance that some appear to see in trying to convince the public that human civilization can and should survive without oil. But, asks OPEC’s head, “What if investments in supply fall as a result, but demand for oil keeps increasing, as we are seeing today?”
  
  This is not a new argument. In fact, it is OPEC’s main argument in the war of words with organizations such as the International Energy Agency, which last year called “the beginning of the end” of the oil and gas era, forecasting demand for all three hydrocarbon fuels would peak by 2030.
  
  The International Energy Agency is also the outlet that just recently forecast sales of EVs—a major factor for oil demand destruction according to all predictions—will boom this year, even though sales data from the first three months of the year shows a marked slowdown. Also, it was just revealed by UBS that Norway, which has the highest per-capita penetration rate in EVs, has not moved the needle on oil demand at all since it started on its electrification journey.
  
  OPEC has repeatedly argued that such forecasts are not grounded in reality and that amplifying them could sap new investment in oil and gas supply that the world needs. This, in turn, would eventually lead to a deficit and higher prices, which no consuming country would want to experience.
  
  In the MEES op-ed, however, Al Ghais went a step further, calling transition advocates out on their change of priorities. “Although the main goal of the Paris Agreement on climate change is to reduce emissions – not to choose energy sources – it feels like this has been forgotten,” the OPEC chief wrote. It has been “replaced by rigid narratives to reduce demand for hydrocarbons without thinking through the effects on energy security, socio-economic development, or reducing energy poverty,” he said.
  
  Once again, it is quite difficult to argue with this assertion in light of strong transition NGO opposition to carbon capture, for example. The technology, while not tested at scale and still quite expensive, exists to slash emissions from oil and gas production, and power generation. Yet those NGOs seem to be more concerned with the fact of the oil industry’s existence than the generation of emissions.
  
  The topic of energy poverty that Haitham al Ghais notes in his op-ed is another important one—and a topic that climate activists only discuss in the context of the cheap wind and solar narrative. The question of why, if they are so cheap, the poorest countries in the world have not embraced these two, remains outside the spotlight, however.
  
  Energy poverty is a huge concern in most of the world, population-wise speaking. There are hundreds of millions of people with no access to any electricity, let alone one generated by wind and solar. A lot of these people want to be able to produce their own electricity from their own national resources, yet lenders such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank are limiting access to funding for projects unless they are “aligned” with transition targets—essentially dooming these people to energy poverty.
  
  At least that would have been the case had the oil industry not decided to go with its gut and its knowledge and continue investing in new supply. The problem with this is that the rate of investment is slowing down while oil demand isn’t, which is why OPEC has been warning about underinvestment so insistently.
  
  Of course, a counter-argument could be made that the producers’ cartel is grasping for straws in a world where oil is on its way out—only it would not reflect reality. Just look at Norway and its EVs.

  As of Apr. 29, the MABUX MBP/DBP Index (MDI), tracking the correlation between market bunker prices (MBP) and the MABUX digital bunker price benchmark (DBP), revealed the following price trends across major ports: Rotterdam, Singapore, Fujairah, and Houston.
  
  - HSFO segment: All four selected ports continued to be undercharged, with underprice premiums widening by $2 in Rotterdam, while narrowing by $2 in Fujairah and $1 in Houston. The MDI index in Singapore remained unchanged.
  
  - VLSFO segment: All four ports were in the undercharge zone, with underprice margins increasing further in Rotterdam by $5, Singapore by $3, and Fujairah by $7, while decreasing in Houston by $1.
  
  - MGO LS segment: Houston was registered as the sole overpriced port, with the ratio declining by $1. The other three ports remained undercharged, with margins rising in Rotterdam by $9, Singapore by $18, and Fujairah by $10. The MDI index in Rotterdam exceeded the $100 mark.
