College sport scholarships by sport and gender 2021

College sports scholarships are available to students at the top of their respective sports and can help them with college tuition fees which otherwise run into the tens of thousands of U.S. dollars. Overall, there were almost 152 thousand sports scholarships available to students in 2020/21, with over 3,000 more scholarships available to male athletes than female athletes. Football alone accounted for over 27,000 scholarships in this year.

However most sports are equivalency sports and awards can be allocated in partial amounts, so the total number of scholarships (full and partial) is substantially higher than presented. These numbers are maximums for official sports; each school has the option to award scholarships up to the limit, award none, or award somewhere in between. Varsity sports not listed are not official sports of the NCAA, NAIA or NJCAA and are not subject to scholarships limits set by these associations."
