Finding a date in 2024 is more about swiping online than smiling in real life, with a whole host of apps now readily available to help singletons in their quest for that one true love. With more than 55 billion matches to-date, Tinder is the world's most popular online offering, allowing users to "swipe right" to like or "swipe left" to dislike other users' profiles, which include their photos, a short bio, and interests.

And now a year-end report from the love-finding app has revealed some savvy survey insights about dating in the current climate, giving users a glimpse into how romance and relationships have been recently redefined. The ‘Year in Swipe’ survey launched in December 2023, which, according to the brand: “Shared the State of the Date in 2023, including the trends, terms, and tunes singles leaned into while splashing around the dating pool.”

And with many drowning in a sea of choice, the report was helpful in analysing user surveys and profile information to identify dating trends, revealing users were more inclined to ‘celebrate feminine energy’ or channel a ‘main character energy' or 'do it for the plot’ by approaching dating with a more open-minded perspective. It also revealed that singletons were not too preoccupied with the outcome of relationships, more interested in enjoying the process of getting to know someone instead.

Here, Dr Chandni Tugnait, Life coach and Relationship Expert, shares her relationship ‘Datiquette’, with her 10 dating etiquettes to keep in mind while using dating apps in 2024

Put yourself first: Your dating journey is about discovering yourself and your desires. 80% of 18-25 year olds agree that their own self-care is their top priority when dating. And close to 75% of youngsters find a match more attractive if they are open to working on their mental well-being.

Show the real you: Your profile is your canvas – let it speak volumes! Showcase your authentic self through a captivating mix of photos, videos, fun quotes and even voice notes whenever you can.

Match with intent: Clarify your dating intentions to ensure you and your match are on the same journey. Whether you want to find new friends or are looking for love, it is best to clearly let the other know in the beginning.

Curiosity over assumptions: Forge real connections by being open to other people's ways of thinking. Don't be quick to make assumptions. Show genuine curiosity to get to know your match.

Ditch the dinner date: Add a dash of excitement to your dating experience by ditching the traditional dinner date and level it up with some fun activities. Some examples include coffee dates, concerts and festivals, stand-up comedy shows, movie nights and arcades.

Sober dates for the win: Sober dating is becoming increasingly popular for singles as they believe it’s a genuine way to get to know people. Tinder’s Year in Swipe 2022 report highlighted how more and more singles are raising a glass to sober dates, with 72% users saying on their Tinder profiles that they don’t drink, or only drink occasionally.

Be mindful with your wit: Humour can be fantastic (and sexy even), but steer clear of offensive and hurtful jokes.

Farewell to ghosting: While looking for love, be honest and show respect while communicating with the other person. Instead of ghosting recognise that closure is crucial for both parties.

Be positive: No one likes a Debbie Downer. So, try and maintain an upbeat and stress-free vibe while talking to matches. Remember, dating is about having fun.

Consent is key: Everyone has their comfort zone. Respect them! According to the survey report, 7 out of 10 adults believe that consent should be discussed openly with partners.
