RSVP for WLIC's April 3 Annual Meeting

The 2024 Annual Meeting for the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) is fast approaching and members are encouraged to RSVP for the April 3 event. Members should email Julie Sweney by March 28 to reserve their seat.

The keynote speaker for the meeting will be Kurt Grajkowski, Emergency Services Coordinator at DATCP, who will share insight into how the department prepares for and responds to an animal disease outbreak as well as what can be done to mitigate the risk within communities. Additionally, Dr. Gretchen May, Veterinary Program Manager at DATCP, will share insight on the tools available for disease traceability and share an update regarding the impact of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Wisconsin.

WLIC’s business meeting and board of director elections will follow the guest speaker presentations, which will include an update on the premises registrations and traceability efforts for Wisconsin livestock, the goals for the organization for the future and highlight the strategic initiatives WLIC is taking on ahead of the 2025 renewal cycle.

Minnesota Goat Confirmed to Have Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza

A juvenile goat in Minnesota recently tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). While HPAI has been detected in predatory mammals that prey on infected birds, this is the first identified case of HPAI in domestic livestock in the U.S. The goat lived on the same premises where a poultry flock tested positive for HPAI in late February. The goat shared the same pasture and sole water source as the poultry flock.

HPAI is a known disease of wild and domestic poultry and waterfowl. There is limited information available about HPAI infection in ruminants, though in some species, animals with immature or compromised immune systems appear to be at greater risk of infection. Only young goats were afflicted in the Minnesota case, not mature goats. This case is being investigated by the Minnesota Board of Animal Health with the assistance of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“As we aim to protect livestock for our North Dakota producers, the risk of transmission increases during spring,” says Miranda Meehan, North Dakota State University Extension livestock environmental stewardship specialist.

$7,000 to the organization from previous efforts.

“We are proud to work together and help the foodbanks across our state,” Wisconsin Beef Council Director of Communications and Outreach Kaitlyn Kesler said. “We understand the value beef brings to the table at all stages of life. APHIS Reflects on 2023 Accomplishments, Looks Forward to 2024

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) expertly navigated complex and evolving issues to protect U.S. agriculture and natural resources in 2023.

“Every day, APHIS enhances its mission of protecting American agriculture, boosting agricultural exports, and developing new and better tools to fight invasive pests and diseases. As the challenges and threats evolve, so do we. We learn better surveillance techniques, use more sophisticated equipment, and access more advanced data analysis. We continue to build and strengthen partnerships across sectors and borders, deepening and enhancing our prevention and response capabilities. We do it all in earnest dedication to our mission and everyone who relies on us for their livelihoods and success,” said Marketing and Regulatory Programs Under Secretary Jenny Lester Moffitt.
