Description:
"Within all my photographs, there are a dozen or so really amazing ones that I will not post or share. One such photo is a fandom breaker: I was filming Sherlock and, fortuitously, Peter Capaldi was working as The Doctor on the stage next door. We were hanging out and I suggested he visit the 221b set. The moment he sat in Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock chair, my heart pounded. A photo to die for. I was asked not to break the internet by posting it, although we did one where his face was hidden and that has been posted. I still do not want to share the gem, but have recently become fascinated by the 19th century blueprint photographic technique of Cyanotypes. I decided to take a few of my favorite photos and reprint them using the technique — that way the print is totally original and one of a kind, but I’m not ‘spoiling' my original photograph. Cyanotypes are challenging and the process has been slow. A combination of sun/UV intensity, consistency of chemicals, paper absorption, pH of water, and temperature affect each print. I have derived great pleasure in the experiment including many fails. (Check out my instagram @rtalalay for a few clips of the developing process). I finally managed to develop a beautiful print of the “WhoLock” photo, and am offering in this auction benefitting the ACLU SoCal. (I am indebted to, inspired by and in awe of this organization.) The Watermark through Peter’s face etc is protecting the image from being shared, but is not in the piece being offered." - Rachel Talalay
