The business, known as Brightside Steel Works, and said variously to date from 1774 or 1793, was described in the 1880s as the largest manufacturer of steel in the Sheffield area. At that date it had agencies in Europe and the United States. Thomas Jessop, who died in 1887, took a leading part in public life in Sheffield holding the offices of both Mayor and Master Cutler, and is remembered as the founder of the Jessop Hospital for Women |
