I'm back, baby!

That mission really came down to the line, but it ended picture perfectly, imo. The Sentinel and Blackjack really won't be missed, they were kinda stinkers mech wise, and our replacements are missing the prototype and or explody ammo problems of their predecessors.

I'm obviously voting to go for it on the dropship vote, drag in everyone.

“I don’t suppose anyone else has any chair time in an Assault ‘Mech?” Prodigal slid into a seat at the little common lounge table in the shared common area of the Mechwarrior bunkroom. They each had their own space for privacy, but that was little more than a bed and a dresser efficiently crammed into a space the size of a small closet. Only Prodigal had her own stateroom—and that was just barely large enough to add a writing desk; for the rare reports that needed paper copies.

She was met with three blank stares, which drew a chuckle out of her. “Yeah, yeah, longshot I know—but Rampart’s a noble. There was a chance I wasn’t going to get stuck driving the brick. I’ve actually got experience in a BattleMaster, so I’m hoping it’ll come back to me—but we’re all going to need to do some crash intensive training over the next few weeks. Except you, Grandpa—you just have to learn how we’re loving up so you can compensate.”

The ‘old man’ chuckled, “That is what I do best.”

“Speaking of which,” Prodigal rested her tablet on the table; which lit up as the bigger flatscreen inside downloaded a file. A moment later, it flickered and then opened the file. “This is our current TO&E. We don’t have a spare ER PPC so Mikal can’t get it up to its best specs; but the BattleHammer’s really flexible. He’ll have a gunpod with a regular PPC ready by the time we need to start walking. And he’ll probably have the leg back on the Falcon, too.”

“So what about Ravager?” Ironhead scowled. “Will she be joining us?”

“She accepted. All it cost me was ‘a chance for revenge on the fuckers who burned New Kearney’ and a trip back to Galatea when this is over; so she can go full-time merc.”

Stewart whistled, “The latter’s going to be a doozy on a Lieutenant’s salary.”

“It’ll be worth it.” Prodigal fell silent for only a moment. “I hope. The locals too.”

“And what’d they want?” Ironhead pressed.

“I’ll tell you after.”

“Great,” Ironhead’s scowl intensified. “That means we’re not going to like it.”

“Probably not,” Prodigal laughed, “but it’s honestly not bad. Now—we need to put together a training schedule.”

Crash Training Vote (cost)
1) Prodigal – Improve Gunnery to 3 (4 xp)
2) Prodigal – Gain the Stand Aside SPA (1 xp)
3) Grandpa – Gain the Sandblaster SPA (2 xp)
4) Rampart – Improve Gunnery to 3 (4 xp)
5) Rampart – Gain the Hothead SPA (2 xp)
6) Ironhead – Improve Piloting to 4 (1 Guts, 2 xp)
7) Ironhead – Gain the Range Master (Medium) SPA (3 xp)
8) No further training (no cost)

Stand Aside – This unit may pass directly through hexes occupied by enemy units at a cost depending on the size difference between the two units.

Sandblaster - -1 bonus ToHit when firing only LB-X Cluster munitions, SRMs, or LRMs. Adds 1 to the cluster table roll at long and medium ranges, and 2 to the cluster table roll at short range. This effect is lost if any other weapon (including any other type of cluster weapon) is fired.

Hothead – Reduces the overheat penalty ToHit by 1

Range Master (Medium) – All attacks made at medium range have a -2 bonus, attacks made at short range suffer a +2 penalty.

PTN’s note: I will do every training that has enough points, in order of popularity, until the points run out or ‘no further training’ becomes the most popular choice.

One of the Dimetrodon’s marines was waiting as Prodigal popped the BattleMaster’s temporary canopy. It was repaired enough for simulations, even if she had to let her neurohelmet do most of the heavy lifting. Mechwarriors didn’t rely much on their visuals anyway—a BattleMech could ‘see’ and shoot things that would just be tiny dots to the naked eye.

“Lieutenant,” the officer greeted her with a typical Davion-accented ‘leftenant.’ “Lieutenant Cardozo would like to see you. He’s in the brig.”

She set her neurohelmet down on the BattleMaster’s command couch and climbed out onto the access gantry, closed the ports on her cooling vest, and pulled her jacket from the BattleMaster’s storage compartment. The Dimetrodon’s marines had already been polite enough to wait for her to finish her sim time, she wasn’t going to make them wait for her to change out of her mechwarrior shorts and cooling vest. As warded as she could be against Frigid’s ever-present cold, she fell in behind the marine.

“Lead the way, corporal.”

It didn’t take long to reach the dry storage closet they’d converted into a temporary brig. The Confederate-class was tiny and didn’t have much in the way of amenities. Any room with a locking door and no computer access could become a brig in a pinch. They only had one real prisoner at the moment, and Prodigal couldn’t help but wonder what she had to say. Lt. Radomir Cardozo nodded at the brig’s guards as Syntyche approached. The taciturn young man motioned her towards the door.

“She’ll only speak to you.”

Prodigal quirked an eyebrow, but stepped into the close quarters of the brig. Lt. Cardozo stood behind her, blocking the doorway with his wide body. Just because the prisoner would only speak to her didn’t mean their conversation was going to be private.

“You’re the ‘Mech lance leader?” the prisoner asked, then nodded as she took stock of Prodigal’s dress. She was a slight woman, with a mousy build that had turned to muscle through years of exercise. “Of course—and I interrupted a training session. And we haven’t lifted yet. And I could hear the telltail noises of a very busy Mechbay no matter where on this ship you lock me up. You’re planning an operation, and there’s only one thing on the planet you could possibly hit.”

She grinned as Prodigal scowled, “Ha! I knew it,” a moment after, as Syntyche turned to leave, the prisoner added, “Wait! I can help!”

“The captain of the Typhoon Albatross is no fool,” she offered freely. “They’re sure to have the gunports undogged—you’ll be under fire the moment they spot you. But I know the safety codes and they know my voice. They’ll let me onboard—and from the boarding ramp I can threaten the engine directly. That’ll buy you a minute or two to storm the ship before the ship’s marines can storm my Falcon and pry me out of the cockpit.”

Prodigal scoffed, “I don’t see what you get out of this.”

“I’m a mercenary,” the woman replied. “From the Taurian Concordat. This was just a job and I know if I don’t help you I’m going to spend the rest of my life in an actual brig—or worse, sent to a Star League firing squad. I help you, you drop the charges. And, if I do well enough, maybe you even let me keep my ‘Mech?”

Syntyche bit back an instant negative, “I’ll think about it.”

“Sergeant,” Prodigal stepped into Mikal’s sphere, so she could speak with him as privately as the open Mechbay allowed. Fortunately, the clamor of work was all-encompassing. He looked up from a set of BattleMaster oneline electrical drawings.

“Oh, Lieutenant. Just who I wanted to see.” Mikal pulled up his tablet, launching into an unprompted series of plans and pictures. “I was just thinking about that old BattleMaster. It’s a classy brute for sure, but everyone knows how easy a target the cockpit is. I can shore up the canopy, but—”

“A moment, sergeant,” Syntyche interrupted warmly. Mikal would get talking for hours if she let him. “I’m here for a quick status check on the Falcon. Can you have its leg back on by ‘go hour?’”

Mikal seemed surprised. “Probably, but I doubt it’ll be fully repaired. And we don’t have anyone to pilot it anyway. You’re not going to try to give one of the marines a crash course just so the pirate can have a wingman, are you?”

“Able to walk is plenty; and no.” She answered, hoping the chief technician would find that reassuring. “But can you rig up and install a Centurion transponder in it?”

The technician blinked, “But we don’t have any Centurion Weapons.”

“Don’t need ‘em,” Syntyche replied. “The transponder’s enough to cold shutdown a fusion engine with just a command override. It’s why that experiment was dumpstered. The transponders were more useful than the gun, at least for what I need.”

“Yeah, uh—I can cobble one together on our timetable.” Mikal admitted. “But you’ll owe me a drink when we get back to Epsilon Pegasus.”

“Believe me,” Syntyche told the technician. “Compared to some of the other things I’ve been asked for today, that’s practically free.”

“Right,” Mikal fought past his momentary confusion. “So, about the BattleMaster. I can reinforce the cockpit, but—”

Chief Technician Vote
1) “—It won’t have the commanding view of the battlefield BattleMasters are known for.” (BattleMaster loses Weak Head Armor, BattleMaster loses Command ‘Mech)
2) “—the cockpit will be a tighter fit.” (BattleMaster loses Weak Head Armor, BattleMaster gains Cramped Cockpit)
3) “—It’ll be harder to eject safely.” (BattleMaster loses Weak Head Armor, BattleMaster gains Difficult Ejection)
4) “—y’know what, sorry? I forgot what my plan was.” (No change to the BattleMaster)

It lets the BattleMaster shut down an enemy Ace, even one that gained it out of desperation.

It doesn't stack (multiple Command 'Mechs still only shut down one Ace), and it's blocked by enemy Command 'Mechs--but they have to have more.

We're not really taking the turncoat at her word? What she's offering is risky as hell - we're putting her, in her own 'Mech, almost inside the enemy dropship with free comms.

Any signal she gives compromises the whole op.

We have no leverage at all. She has no incentive to cooperate. She betrays us, she redeems herself and has a great story to tell her buddies in the bar later, she still has her 'Mech, and a successful contract. Plus our salvage that she delivered into her dropship's guns, and some of her team is already dead so it's a bigger cut for her.

That's all winning for her, and she's in the best position to execute the second she gets under the dropship's gun umbrella.

Voting for Prodigal to get the gunnery training- She's driving the most powerful mech by far now, wee need those shots to hit. That takes 2 of 4 shared XP. Second gunnery bump for Rampart as well. It's just the best thing we can do.

Last is Sandblaster for Grandpa. He's kinda stuck in the pokiest mech right now with the least firepower, but, he's also out lance's only permanent critseeker now so we need those lbx cluster rolls hitting.

I think that's what this centurion device is for, talking about shutting down engines? Even if the Merc wants to change sides for a second time, she'll have already brought a fusion engine SCRAM bomb in with her.

Here we go again.
How ruthless are we? Because a Centurion transponder isn't the only thing that could be installed on that Falcon. There are other, remotely triggered options that we don't have to tell the pilot about.

Think of it as an insurance policy.

The Centurion System is a Star League safety mechanism that let a commander remotely disable a mech or vehicle. It was originally developed to make sure Star League tech couldn't be stolen and used against them, but there were a lot of problems with it and eventually the project was mothballed.

I look at it this way: Either way, we're entertained, and hey, at worst, they were gonna be ready for us anyhow. Especially if we plant a Centurion transponder on her mech to give us a push button shutdown kill on it.

Also I do appreciate that the Battlemaster's ER-PPC getting downgraded to a regular is kinda a strict upgrade given how dicey it's heat generation already is.

All of the options have their tradeoffs. 'Weak Head Armour' is a nasty quirk that we really should get rid of if we can. 'Cramped Cockpit' is also very undesirable since it increases the margin of failure for all PSRs and will result in many more detrimental outcomes over time. On the other hand, we probably shouldn't be trading 'Command Battlemech' away since having the option to nullify enemy Aces is a very powerful ability. In my view 'Difficult Ejection' is the least worst option - it sucks for the pilot and will probably result in them taking additional hits on the way out, but if they need to eject it's probably a sign that everything has gone to hell anyway.

glwgameplayer
Nov 16, 2022
I more or less agree with what Scintilla on this one. Cramped Cockpit won’t come into play often, but when it does the penalty may result in our pilot stumbling over themselves or getting decapitated by their seatbelt. Command Battlemech is similarly very important for dealing with enemy aces, and shutting that down will be of immense help to us.

By comparison not being able to eject is… well it’s bad. Real bad for the pilot. But if the Battlemaster is in danger of going down we’re clearly in a rough spot already. Also being forced to go ride or die may produce interesting results…

“So, this whole area’s a glacier?”

Falconer made small-talk as her ‘Mech’s feet crunched through the top layers of snow. The sweat that trickled down the back of her neck wasn’t just from the heat building in her Falcon’s cockpit—with so many potentially hostile guns pointed at her back, her paranoia had kicked in full force. The Falcon’s rear armor was so thin even a shot from the Rifleman’s autocannons would punch straight through.

Her only hope lay in trusting that the SLDF commander would keep her word—a prospect no true Taurian would ever relish—but she was years from the Concordat and that particular brand of paranoia had faded a bit. The way the SLDF had dismantled Captain Atlas had been telling, anyone crazy enough to down an assault ‘Mech and all of its support with three medium ‘Mechs and a light wasn’t going to have any trouble capturing a single DropShip.

“Yeah,” one of the local tank drivers replied. “Ain’t too bad to drive on, but in the summer the whole top layer melts down to about a hundred meters. Makes a nice, flat, easy-lookin’ landing zone but there’re whole entire DropShips sunk into the ice. We’ve gotta be careful, too—the spring melt’s starting, so there’s gonna be air bubbles—little pockets of thin ice. Shouldn’t be a danger to the tanks, but some of your heavier ‘mechs might fall right through. Keep your tac-maps up, and we’ll try to mark them as best we can.”

“I thought it would be more difficult to approach,” the SLDF commander interjected. “But it looks like we’ll be able to make use of the crevasses to approach unseen.”

“The bottoms are a bit shady, so the ground should be guaranteed solid there.” The tanker agreed. “Just be careful about some of the crevasse edges. They’re bound to be real thin, with lots of overhangs.”

“Right,” the SLDF officer replied. “Best move into position, then. Falconer and I have a performance to put on.”

****************************************

“—shoulder joint’s seized up, I can barely raise my right arm—and the cap’n took a cockpit hit. We had to field patch it and his radio’s still out,” If the run in had been enough to make her sweat, lying under the guns of the Järnprins was something else entirely. Falcon was momentarily grateful that the SLDF commander had forced her to repeat the script until she could recite it from memory. Even then, something about both lance commanders returning should’ve put the Järnprins on edge. If they suspected anything, they’d be undogging the guns and the ship’s turrets would’ve been swiveling her way.

“Understood, Falconer.” The DropShip’s turrets didn’t move; but its primary boarding ramp descended. The momentary elation turned icy cold when the huge feet of Calhoun’s Stalker plodded into view. “We’ll escort you in. Any hostiles pursuing?”

“Negative, Järnprins,” Falconer fought to keep her breathing steady as the four ‘Mechs of the DropShip’s defensive lance spread out to form a perimeter. She brought her little Falcon between them, and they didn’t spare her even a twist. “We made short work of the locals, they just surprised us with a Banshee FrankenMech—” She paused a moment. “The rest of the lance is continuing the mission, under Sgt. Van Altima. I’m eager for a chance to warm up.”

“Roger. Wecome back, Falconer. We’ll put a pot of coffee on for you.”

The sound of the Falconer’s footfalls changed as she clambered up the ramp. She’d made a show of outdistancing Prodigal’s BattleMaster, with luck she’d made enough space that the Star Leaguer wouldn’t be completely exposed in the next few moments; but not so far away that the defensive lance would be able to follow her onboard. She stopped, half-way to the Mechbay and leveled her ‘Mech’s lasers towards the Järnprins’s fusion engines.

“Falconer to Järnprins,” she radioed again. “Power down your weapons systems and open all your boarding ramps. This is not a joke—I have my lasers pointed at the fusion engine. If I hear your guns fire, see a ‘Mech, or see even one of your marines I will open fire.”

Right, since I can't make it through an LP without rebalancing something (and since we've already given small weapons the buff I think they need), I'm looking once again at autocannons. The AC/2 and AC/5 specifically, since the AC/10 and AC/20 are fine-ish. The LB-10X always obsoletes the standard AC/10 and I don't think anything can fix that.

How do you feel about these proposed balance tweaks?

Autocannon/5 - Has a single shot and burst fire mode. Burst fire mode functions as per the current Ultra AC rules (2 shells fired, jam chance on a poor roll). Clearing a jam takes a turn and costs a shot as you eject an unspent shell to jar the jammed shell loose.

Ultra Autocannon/5 - Is designed to fire in burst mode, it's got extra recoil compensators and a redesigned feed system. Doesn't suffer a jam chance, has a +2 bonus to the cluster table so it now has a better than 50% chance of both shells hitting.

Autocannon/2 - Has a single shot and burst-fire mode. Burst fire mode fires 3 rounds instead of just 2, but has the standard UAC jam chance as above. This gives 1 ton of AC/2 ammo 15 rounds of shots which is pretty ideal.

Ultra Autocannon/2 - Exists, as above, but with the three round AC/2 burst. Wasn't in the Helm memory core because "That poo poo is so simple, we can't imagine anyone would have trouble scaling it down."

All of this sounds pretty sensible to me. The lower calibre ACs have always had issues with their damage-to-tonnage ratios and turning them into discount UACs (and making the actual UACs slightly better) is a decent compromise.

I mean, reducing their weight is possible, I just don't want to have to edit every currently available 'Mech.

I mean, not that I'm not doing that anyway to staple in an occasional era-appropriate tweak like ER Large Lasers or Ferro-Fibrous Armor.

I do intend to bring in the Light Autocannons too, but they won't get burst fire modes. They're more like stripped-down periphery carbine autocannons.

If I were given creative control I would reclass ACs into Light, Medium and Heavy with the following stats:

-Light AC: 5 damage, 24 hex max range, weighs 6 tons, takes up 2 crits, produces 1 heat, 20 shots per ton of ammo (Basically an AC/5 with an AC/2's tonnage and range)
-Medium AC: 10 damage, 15 hex max range, weighs 10 tons, takes up 6 crits, produces 3 heat, 10 shots per ton of ammo (An AC/10, but slightly lighter and takes up fewer crits)
-Heavy AC: 20 damage, 9 hex max range, weighs 14 tons, takes up 10 crits, produces 7 heat, 5 shots per ton of ammo (Unmodified AC/20)

I'd either remove the AC/2 entirely or rebrand it as a Flak Cannon that deals extra damage against aircraft and infantry.
