Links in Help files (*.chm) don't work. I get DNS error page.

Hi Everybody,

All the links in any of help files (files with .chm
extention) don't work. When ever I click on a link I get
a DNS error page. Any suggestions on this issues

Kelly has a chm link checker, although I don't know if this answers

Nope that did not work. Every link points to html
document with address "similar" to following:

ms-its:C:\winnt\help\imgtasks.chm::/HELP=glossary.hlp
TOPIC=gls_rendering_intent

Here are some things to try:

1) Upgrade the components used to view HTML Help files by applying
Microsoft Critical Update 811630.

2) Delete the file hh.dat, which you should find in this directory:

\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML Help

This is a database file that saves such session information as the
window position and favorites for the HTML Help viewer. If the file
has been corrupted then .chm files may behave erratically. Windows
will automatically re-create the file when you next open any .chm
file.

3) Empty your Temporary Internet Files (TIF) directory. A full TIF directory
can cause HTML Help files to misbehave.

4) Use MJ's Help Diagnostics to check that the HTML Help viewer components
are properly installed and registered on your machine.

Something you can look at: Go to Control Panel \ Folder Options\ File
Types. Go down to .chm. Click Advanced. At the top it should say
Compiled HTML Help file (I'll be surprised if it does, given your
problem - don't try to change it since this only reflects other
settings.) Action: open.

Click the Edit button.

Inside that area, action: open.
Application used (with quotes) "C:\WINDOWS\hh.exe" %1
Use DDE is checked
Application: hh
Topic: system

Apply and okay your way out.

Thank you Pete,

Clearing my Temporary Internet Files fixed this issue. Is
there's a particular relationship between Html Help
Viewer and Temporary Internet files.

Anyway thank you again, MVPs rock!!! (I am talking my
first MCP test in XP on tuesday).

I haven't quite got to the bottom of why HTML Help files need to make
use of the Temporary Internet Files directory, but it does seem to be
the case that Windows tries to place a copy of some of the CHM source
files in this directory when you view a help topic. If the directory
is full then this appears not to happen, which gives rise to the
problem you encountered (and some others too, such as the inability to
view the source of a help topic or Web page).

In any event, the fact that CHM files use Internet Explorer as the
display engine is central to the issue. Problems with the browser are
also likely to manifest themselves in problems with the help viewer.
