Michigan’s Children will explore children’s mental health from infancy through school-age at its next online Lunch & Learn program, ‘Are the Kids Alright?’: Exploring Children’s Mental Health in Michigan, and during our Speaking for Kids podcast featuring Dr. Walter Gilliam, of the Yale University Child Study Center, streaming now. ‘Are the Kids Alright?’ will feature a panel of Michigan-based experts, including:

  • Kae Dubay, Parent Representative, Early On Michigan Interagency Coordinating Council;
  • Mary Mackrain, Consultant, MDHHS Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation program;
  • Danielle Rice, Workforce Development Specialist, Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health;
  • Renee Topolski, Deputy Director, School-Community Health Alliance of Michigan;
  • Rylee Tuggle, Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Author of "The Trusted Trio" on childhood trauma.

Since the start of the pandemic, the mental health of children of all ages has gained greater focus from the Governor and Legislature, including in the current state budget process. In this budget cycle, Michigan's Children is strongly supporting expanded mental health services for children of all ages, including expansion of the infant and early childhood mental health consultation program. This year, we seek a $6.8 million budget increase to help bring more of those valuable consultation services to beleaguered child care providers across the state. Meanwhile, we're pleased that the Governor's budget plan increases Early On funding by $7.1 million for children aged 0-3 with developmental delays, and boosts funding for school-based mental health professionals by $120 million.

Look for Matt Gillard’s Speaking for Kids podcast conversation with Dr.Gilliam, the researcher who headed the groundbreaking study on expulsion rates in state preschool programs, on our website here or on popular podcast streaming sites today.
