Floored Genius, Vol. 2 (Expanded Edition)

Floored Genius. Vol. 2 is a passionate collection of recordings that Julian Cope did for the BBC between 1983 and 1991. Cope’s studio recordings in the ‘80s were often carefully constructed productions, while the live persona could swing loose and wild. “The Greatness and Perfection of Love” is stripped down to keyboards and a rhythm machine. “Sunspots” is much more modest with simple electric guitars merging with the keyboards. The “Soul Medley” includes pieces of Funkadelic and Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention interspersed with Cope’s own ramblings. “High Class Butcher” is a B-movie sounding B-side. “24a Velocity Crescent” goes even crazier into manic psychedelia. This Expanded Edition includes 13 bonus performances to round up to 30 tracks. Cope’s legitimate hit single, “World Shut Your Mouth,” has extra flash. Peggy Suicide’s “East Easy Rider” breaks into a fully fleshed- out performance. “Hanging Out and Hung Up On the Line” features some nasty guitar work that Cope would later use to great affect with Brain Donor and other various side-projects and releases.
