Vol 27 No 04 24 Sept 2021
On Wednesday 15 September the Senior Cup Team played its first rugby match of the season against Wesley College. While it was only a friendly, it was momentous being our first game in 18 months: excitement levels were high. The game was hard-fought and we played incredibly well for our first match together. While the final score did not go our way, I feel the match was a fantastic opportunity for us to build on and improve as a team. We look forward to the forthcoming season. We want to give it our all and hope we can work together and drive
towards success.

On the 21 September Form 4 pupils went on a trip to Killiney beach and Kippure mountain. The hike was one hour up and 30 minutes down the mountain. We then took the bus to Killiney beach and swam there for about an hour. We had a lunch break in between and got back at school around 3.45pm. It was good to bond with people in the year group and everyone had great fun. Thank you to all those who organised the trip and spent the day with us.

As a part of the Prefect selection process we participated in an aptitude-style test. The results heavily influenced the Prefect training we completed in two groups on 8 and 15 September. We undertook a lot of self-reflection and were able to categorize our personalities by type and completed numerous activities to help us better understand them. At the end of the training we each received a personal profile that gave us an insight into our psychological types and aims to help us use our strengths to work together as a team and be the best Prefects we can be!

On Wednesday the Senior 1 team played an away game against The King’s Hospital for our first match of the season. Everyone was very excited but also had pre-match nerves since it was our first game in so long. It was our first time playing a match together too and we were really keen to start the hockey season on the right foot. The King’s Hospital were strong in the first quarter and ended up scoring a goal. This made us even more determined to level the game and in the third quarter, after many opportunities, we scored! We were so happy and our play really picked up in the fourth quarter. Everyone’s mood had lifted and we had grown used to each others' style of play. We emerged as the stronger
team towards the end of game and drew 1-1. It was a great start to the hockey season and we can’t wait for what comes next!

This was the Junior 2's second match of the season which was played against St Columba’s College. We put up a good fight but our opponents seemed to have the upper hand throughout the game. The High School conceded a goal midway through the first half to a back handed shot from the edge of the D. The goalkeeper got a hand on it but the shot was very powerful and deflected into the side netting. The second half was much more positive drawing more fouls, attacking, and getting more shots off. We fought very hard in the second half but St Columba’s sealed their victory. There were lots of positives to be taken at the end of the game, but even more work to do before the start of the season. Bring on the next match!

On Wednesday we played our first hockey match for The High School and our first 11-a-side for some against local rivals St Columba's College. We had to learn fast in the first half but Sean Agigbobah scored an amazing goal. Unfortunately, luck was on our opponent's side and the result did not go our way. Still, we had great fun in the beautiful sunshine and we are already looking forward to the next match.

Form 4 Food and Culinary Skills
Last week we had our first Food and Culinary class with Ms Bergin where we made delicious chocolate chip cookies. As we entered we could see that the counters and utensils were numbered so we knew where we were to go and what equipment we would be using. We set to work, making sure the flour was sifted and the butter was measured accuratley before we added the rest of the ingredients. Once we had put our cookie mixture in the oven we cleaned down the counters and equipment ready for the next class to use. Overall, the results were amazing. Baking was really fun and we are looking forward to our next lesson when we will be making fajitas.

Last Friday the school was closed to pupils while teachers and staff participated in a full day of training and planning. We had ICT training in the morning, followed by a talk on Universal Design for Learning, and Dignity in the Workplace training. We participated in Suport for Learning consultations and subject meetings throughout the afternoon. All in all it was a very productive day.
Badminton has not been available as a sport at The High School since March 2020 so we are very excited to announce that it is back on the extra-curricular calendar for our pupils from this week. All those who are interested need to wear the correct sports shoes and HSD PE uniform. The racquets and other equipment are provided by the school. The lessons will take place every Tuesday and Thursday in the Gymnasium. If you are interested in playing Badminton, please contact Ms Rugg. All pupils are most welcome!
Orchestra and Choir Rehearsals
Due to the recent lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, rehearsals for The High School Orchestra and Choir are now permissible. If you like to sing or play an instrument then we would like to hear from you. Choir reshearsals take place on Tuesday at 4.00 pm with Ms Bourke while the Orchestra meets each Thursday at the same time with Ms Little. Both groups gather in the large, purpose-built rehearsal space in M1. All new members are very welcome!
