A Message from the Administrators
Hello Deer Park High School Families!
The first quarter has flown by and Fall has arrived with its array of colors and cooler weather. Mindy and I are extremely proud of our DPHS students who through their hard work and effort earned the first quarter honor roll. There will be a new section below in the Wildcat Weekly every Sunday that highlights exemplars, one of which is the first quarter Honor Roll. There you will see the names of our students and their achievements. A special thanks to our honor roll students who are role models for all students attending DPHS. A sincere congratulations to our students and their families!
Another exemplar I want to highlight is the DPHS Band and Color Guard who qualified with Superior Ratings for the State Marching Band finals at the University of Dayton due to their Superior Ratings at Band Competitions last Saturday. Mr. Bauer, Mr, Vetter (Our Band Instructors), and Mrs. Livingston (Color Guard Instructor) have done a super job this year leading our program. Also, Mindy and I couldn't be more proud of our Band students. We salute you!
In closing, we hope all our students have enjoyed their long weekend. We'll be primed and ready to leap into the month of November focused on Teaching and Learning on Monday!

Classroom Highlight
Teaching and learning is our core business during the instruction day each week. Mindy and I have been in multiple classrooms. This week I want to highlight the teaching and learning that took place in Ms. Godwin's English Language Arts classroom.
This week in Ms. Godwin's AP Language and Composition course, students are considering how technology is impacting human intelligence. They began by discussing their initial thoughts on whether technology is having an overall positive or negative impact on human intelligence and supported their opinions with evidence from their personal experiences as well as anything they have read on the topic outside of class.
This led to a lively discussion of the role of technology in their own lives and invited some self-reflection. Then students were tasked with looking at what other thinkers and writers had to say on the subject by reading a curated collection of texts that speak to the topic. This all led up to the lesson on Tuesday in which students brainstormed issues/topics surrounding the idea of technology and human intelligence, created a mind map of issues, and developed a source grid highlighting the most important issues and what the source texts had to say about those issues.
These activities support two of the focus skills for the current unit, identifying and explaining claims and evidence within an argument and developing paragraphs that include claims and evidence supporting the claim. These skills are set forth by the college board and will be assessed in May when the students take the Advanced Placement Language and Composition exam with the goal of achieving college credit.
Thank you Ms. Godwin for challenging your student with a rigorous standards based lesson. It was great to see the student engaged in critical thinking and problem solving!

Band Qualifies for OMEA State Finals
This past Saturday, the Deer Park Marching Wildcats performed at two band competitions in one day. The first competition was at Springfield Shawnee High School. The band competed in Class B. They finished third in their class, earned Best Color Guard and earned a superior rating qualifying them for the Ohio Music Education Association State Marching Band Finals for a 28th consecutive year!
Student Spotlight: Jayden Moore
Deer Park Jr./Sr. High School ninth grader Jayden Moore competes in a different kind of sport than the typical Wildcat student-athlete. Earlier this year, Moore competed in, and won, the Professional Kennel Club Ohio State Youth Championship for raccoon hunting!
Building news
- Trick or Treat for the Hungry is back and better than ever in 2021! Deer Park students will once again be canvassing Deer Park neighborhoods in hopes of collecting canned food items for our annual holiday food drive. We have all sections of Deer Park covered by student volunteers. No need for candy; when our costume-clad teens arrive at your door, simply offer up any canned goods or non-perishable items you're willing to part with and we'll take it from there! All donated items will be added to our stock of holiday food drive items. Students will be around the neighborhoods on Halloween night, Sunday, October 31 from 6-8 p.m.
- Extended Absences and Make-Up Work due to Covid:
- Students can really fall quickly behind when they need to be out for several days. Many students also offer up “I don’t know what to do!” when parents/guardians ask if they should be working on items. Obviously, students should rest if they are ill, but we want to share some tips on how students and families can manage absent work when this happens:
- Check Schoology together. This is the #1 location where teachers post their Google Meet links, make-up assignments, daily agendas, etc.
- Can’t access Schoology? Email the teachers. This is the next best step!
- If all else fails, contact the school at 513-891-0010. This is also very important if your student says they are missing their Chromebook or charger.
- Upon return, students should:
- Take advantage of their xbells to go to teachers about their absent work.
- Come in on Thursdays from 7:35 - 8:00 to get help if needed.
- Attend an after school homework club (see below for locations)
Continue to check Schoology daily for those assignments that are still listed as missing!
- Need some extra math help? The math department is available for support M-W after school:

- Need some academic help? Morning Intervention is available all year for students to come in for extra help from teachers on Thursdays at 7:35am. Students also have a daily “extra help” bell during the day to meet with their teachers.

In Case You Missed It
Senior Serve
In three days, the Deer Park Class of 2022 participated in a widespread service activity across the city of Cincinnati known as "Senior Serve." The senior class volunteered nearly 700 hours this week at multiple non for profit agencies (like Matthew 25 Ministries, Gorman Heritage Farms, FreeStore Food Bank, InReturn, and LADD) while simultaneously discussing and investigating issues of hunger, food scarcity, community, and housing. Seniors spend the week giving back to others, reinforcing Winston Churchill's famous line "you make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give."
In the afternoon seniors reflected on their experience in small groups, in addition to turning their attention to life beyond high school. Grades 10-12 counselor, Corrie Madden, met with every senior and had the opportunity to check in on post-secondary plans. Additionally, seniors took part in an open forum discussion on "life beyond high school" with representatives from Bellarmine University, Northern Kentucky University, University of Cincinnati, Wright State University, Miami University, and Xavier University (the very best school in the midwest).
"Beyond having the opportunity to work with our students in real-world scenarios, we also got to remind ourselves that Deer Park is truly a bright spot in the greater Cincinnati area- a place filled with giving and compassionate students who regularly see (and act) beyond their own immediate wants and emotions. While it might sound cliche, it truly makes Deer Park the place to be."
