Grace au magasin PCH à Bruxelles, , j’ai pu tester le Zeiss Loxia 21mm F2.8

1 La Famille Loxia /

Les Zeiss Loxia sont une famille d’objectifs à mise au point manuelle, elle comprend 5 objectifs en 2018, tous testé ici

• Zeiss Loxia 21mm F2.8
• Zeiss Loxia 25mm F2.4
• Zeiss Loxia 35mm F2
• Zeiss Loxia 50mm F2
• Zeiss Loxia 85mm F2.4

Ils ont tous les caractéristiques suivantes:

• une construction tout métallique (y compris le pare soleil) de très haute qualité
• une échelle de profondeur de champ et de distance de mise au point
• une bague de sélection de l’ouverture avec la possibilité d’avoir des click (photos) ou de varier en continu sans bruit (video) – voir comment dans le chapitre suivant
• une bague de mise au point tournant sur 90°, fluide  mais avec assez de résistance pour autoriser une mise au point manuelle très précise et couplé automatiquement avec le grossissement de mise au point et le focus peaking des boitiers Sony
• Une protection contre la poussière et les intempéries
• Même si nous sommes en présence d’objectifs manuels , les exifs sont bien transmis au boitier grâce au contacts électroniques

1 The Loxia Family

The Zeiss Loxia are a lens family with manual focus , it contains 5 lenses as of 2018 all tested here

• Zeiss Loxia 50mm F2
• Zeiss Loxia 85mm F2.4

They share the following common specifications

• a full metal construction (including les s hood) of a very high quality
• an engraved depth of field scale and focusing distance 
• an aperture ring, that allow to either have clicks for photos or than can vary silently on a continuous basis for video (see next chapter)
• a large focusing ring rotating by 90° , fluid with some resistance that allow for precise manual focus, this coupled with the automatic zoom and focus peaking from Sony 
• Dust and moisture resistant
• Even if it a manual lens, the exif are well transmitted to the cameras via the electronic contacts 

1.2 Click (photos) / Declick videos

Pour passer du mode photos, où la bague d’ouverture varie par 1/3 IL avec un click, au mode vidéo, où la bague d’ouverture peut varier en continu sans bruit, Zeiss fournit une petite clé qui permet de faire pivoter de 180° une petite vis marquée d’un point noir sur le fut de l’objectif.

Quand les 2 points noir sont alignés on est en mode photo , quand les 2 points noirs sont opposés on est en mode vidéo.

Ce qui impose de devoir démonter l’objectif pour exécuter cette opération. Certains Sony Zeiss et GM, eux, ont en général un bouton sur le fut de l’objectif a cet effet.

To switch between the photos mode (where the aperture can vary with a click by 1/3 IL) to video (with a quiet continuously varying aperture) you need to use a small key provided by Zeiss.

You willl need to turn an adjustment screw with a black dot by 180% on the bayonet surface. When the 2 dots are close to each other your are  in photo mode (click) when the 2 dots are apposite your are in video mode.

This means that you can’t switch from one mode to the other one without unmounting the lens , which some of the Sony Zeiss and Sony GM do allow (with a switch button on the barrel of the lens)

3 Performances Photos

3.1 Piqué / Sharpness

Les tests on été effectué sur un A7RII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix

Pour rappel pour avoir une meilleure qualité de visualisation que sur le blog, vous pouvez regarder chacune des photos en pleine résolution sur flickr ici : Zeiss Loxia 21mm F2.8

Le piqué est excellent dès la pleine ouverture à F2.8 et ne s’ameliore pas en fermant le diaphragme. A F16 la diffraction fait chuter le piqué comme le montre les images ci dessous

Les coins sont très bons à F2.8  et deviennent eux aussi excellent dès F4, l’objectif est donc très homogène et utilisable dès la pleine ouverture

Par rapport au Sony FE12-24 , le Zeiss fait clairement mieux

The lens is excellent at F2.8 and does not really improve further , at F16 diffraction is visible and sharpness is decreasing

Corners are very good and become excellent at F4. For a wide angle , this lens is really sharp consistent across the whole frame

compared to the Sony FE12-24 , the Loxia 21 mm is doing cleary better

3.2 Vignettage / Distorsion / aberrations chromatiques / Bokeh / Flare

Le vignettage et la distorsion sont visibles fort heureusement Lightroom corrige cela automatiquement

Les aberrations chromatiques ne sont pas visibles. La résistance eau flare est très bone

Vu la grande profondeur de champ meme à F2.8 il est très difficile d’avoir un fond flou donc de juger d’un quelconque Bokeh

3.2 Lens Fall off / distorsion / chromatic aberrations / Bokeh / Flare

Vignetting and distortion is visible but Lightroom is correcting those very well

Chromatic aberrations are not visible as Lightroom is correcting them very efficiently. Flare resistance is very good

Bokeh is difficult to asses considering the very big depth of field for a wide angle, I could not get a enough blurry background to asses it

 5 Conclusion

Le Zeiss Loxia 21mm F2.8 délivre d’excellentes performance sur tout le champ dès la pleine ouverture

• La mise au point manuelle est un vrai plaisir sur ses Loxia
• La construction est parfaite et l’objectifs est très discret
• Les défauts optiques sont tous très bien corrigés automatiquement par Lightroom
• silencieux en vidéo
• Les couleurs et le contraste sont superbes typique d’un Zeiss

Un superbe objectif pour du paysage , de la photo de l’architecture ou de la photo de rue!

A classer parmi les meilleures optique de Zeiss

5 Conclusion

The Zeiss Loxia 21mm F2.8 has an outstanding performance accross the frame as from the widest aperture

• The manual focusing is a pleasure on the Loxia
• Build quality is perfect
• Optical issues are all very well corrected automatically by Lightroom
• The lens is small , discrete and quiet in video
• Color rendition and constrast is superb and carry the Zeiss signature

A excellent lens for landscape architecture and street photography, one of the best of Zeiss!
