Enquirer high school athlete of the week winners, Aug. 31

In a vote that ended Aug. 31, cincinnati.com readers voted nearly 80,000 times for the Cincinnati Enquirer athlete of the week winners for Aug. 20-26.

You do not have to be a subscriber to vote, a period that lasts Monday afternoon to Friday at 3 p.m. each week. Please submit any nominees by Sunday evening for the previous week's performances to mlaughman@enquirer.com. You can vote once an hour from any device.

This week's winners are:

Ohio football team: Oak Hills - The Highlanders were winless last year and had lost 12 in a row before defeating the defending Indiana 4A champions 28-21 on a pass from Ethan Myers to Aaron Frick.

Northern Kentucky football team: Covington Catholic – The Colonels rolled to 2-0 start with 41-0 rout of Henry Clay.

Ohio football player: Ethan Myers, Oak Hills – The quarterback had 3 touchdown passes for 171 yards and 1 touchdown for 87 yards rushing to defeat defending state champion East Central Aug. 24.

Northern Kentucky football player: Trey Gronotte, Covington Catholic – The kicker was 5-for-5 in PATs and 2-for-2 in field goals from 35 and 29 yards in a win over Henry Clay Aug. 24.

Boys cross country: Joe Curtsinger, Bishop Brossart – The senior took third place the Moeller Primetime Invitational Division II race, helping Brossart to a second-place team finish.

Girls cross country: Carly Spletzer, Lakota East – The sophomore finished second place in the Lakota East Fall Classic Aug. 25 to help the team to a first-place finish. She ran a season-best 19:14.

Boys golf: Jack Lindgren, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy – The senior shot a 73 and was named medalist at the Eastside Challenge at Stillmeadow Country Club. He shot a 3-over 75 at Beavercreek Golf Club in the first round of the Miami Valley Conference tournament (second round in September), finishing the day atop the leaderboard. He also helped his team to a win over CCD shooting 1-over 37 during a nine-hold match at TPC Rivers Bend.

Girls golf: Hannah Hall, Walton-Verona – She won the regional All ‘A’ Championship and moves on to state with a two-over par 73 at Sugar Bay, claiming the title by 5 shots Aug. 23.

Boys soccer: Ben Glaser, Newport Central Catholic – Glaser was MVP of the Ninth Region All ‘A’ tournament with a win over St. Henry Aug. 25, a match determined by penalty kicks. He stopped two of the four penalty kicks to win the game. He also had a shutout against Holy Cross in the All ‘A’ semifinal Aug. 23. He had two shutouts and two goals in four games last week.

Girls soccer: Kate Brock, Cincinnati Country Day – The junior forward had 2 goals in the 2-1 win over Mariemont Aug. 25. She has 8 points (four goals) on the year so far, good for second in the Miami Valley Conference.

Tennis: Sydney Jones, Oak Hills – She defeated her Seton opponent in first singles to help Oak Hills beat Seton 3-2 Aug. 25.

Volleyball: Emme Madden, West Clermont – The sophomore had 36 kills in matches with McNicholas and Harrison. She also recorded 26 digs, 40 assists and served 40 times with three aces. She added many block assists and is passing 2.3 for the season.

Water polo: Isabel Ingle, Sycamore – She led the team offensively this past weekend with nine goals.
