I much prefer Xarb's Ostroc to the "terrible pseudo-battlepod" version that's traditional. I don't think there's any question why of all the Unseen, the Ost- series is the one no one remembers...or wants to remember.

The Ostsol was the best 60 tonner in 3025 play, which isn't saying much, but it owed that distinction to fully committing to the laser gimmick. It's probably the Ost- people most remember. The Ostroc's the one everyone forgets, but it (and the Quickdraw) make for decent heavy mooks in a campaign since they're not that threatening and tend to explode. The Ostscout's actually been redesigned twice, the latest version's really good. It's the Ost- people are next most likely to remember, probably for all the times they misused it and it died instantly but possibly for that one time their jerk of an opponent used it and it was an invincible spotter for indirect LRM attacks. Seriously the Ostscout's really good. The Ostwar wasn't introduced until 3076 (even though it's older than the others by far) so nobody knows it exists.

Isn't there an Ostscout that jumps 11 or something similarly asinine?

# ? Jul 7, 2018 21:51 |

It's worth noting that once you get to the pre-Jihad/early Jihad era, all three of the original Osts all get insane variants. The Ostroc remains the least impressive of the bunch, but the c3i Ostscouts and the TSM Ostsols are really, really good. The Ostsol-6D might actually be my favorite non-jumpjet mech of all time, with the Excalibur-CS the only other real contender for that title. And the upgraded Ostscouts take "insane indirect fire spotter" up a few notches to "my entire network will fire at short range forever and there is nothing you can ever do about it."

Weird as they are the Ostmechs are leagues ahead of their contemporaries. They're only "bad" because A) the heavies are on the low end of their weight class but compared to the other 60 tonners they're pretty great; and B) the Ostscout got derided once in fiction by an idiot because it can't do a thing an honest-to-god scout shouldn't be doing anyway: dueling with other 'Mechs. Not bad considering the whole series is almost certainly named the way it is because someone thought the Macross battle pods looked like Ostriches. White Sands 7 “It looks like a komainu. Are those the Smoke Jaguars?” “I don’t think so. Symbol’s all wrong. Assuming they haven’t changed it,” Hiro admitted. He’d gotten a clear enough view of the Clan symbol. It might’ve been a unit marking, but he didn’t think so. It was too prominently displayed, too central, and the machines had born no other markings. The Clans were growing increasingly cautious about revealing information that would let the Inner Sphere easily track their troop rotations, but they were still prideful. They generally wanted their enemies to know who’d beaten them, even if they didn’t know precisely which unit had done the deed. “Head in the fight, princess,” Koralia shook Hiro out of his musing. Almost casually, he raised his Shadow Hawk’s right arm and shot the charging Clan light ‘Mech in the chest. Impacts from its machine guns kicked up a shower of sand around the legs of Koralia’s Ryujo, but even the guns fell silent as the caress of Shiro’s high-powered energy beam cut the little scout ‘Mech cleanly in half. “Princess,” Bonsai cackled. “Motion to change the Lieutenant’s callsign.” “Seconded,” the other two chimed in nearly in unison. They were in good spirits, at least. It may have been their first outing as a lance, but they were working together like they’d been doing it for years. PTN, Partial Cover is removed regardless of where the target is as long as the attacker has valid LOS and is above the target. All of those hits to the GS's legs should have done damage. Since that's a solid 15 damage, it felt like worth mentioning. (If that's a house rule you've been running with for years ignore me)

There's a lot about the standard LOS rules I don't particularly like. I feel a lot of them are echoes of the days when Partial Cover was extremely bad for the defending unit, so they found as many reasons as they could to negate it. For those not in the know: Partial Cover used to provide a +1 to-hit penalty as it does now, but any successful attacks were made on the Punch Hit location table. The current version is a little powerful but since it requires adjacent terrain or water (which grants no other defensive bonuses) I don't mind. It's usually harder to get partial cover than it is to find a heavy woods hex to malinger in. It's easy enough to negate just by moving adjacent to (or otherwise outmaneuvering) the target. VVV That was a genuine mistake. Fortunately the Shiro hits regardless. PoptartsNinja fucked around with this message at 00:10 on Jul 9, 2018 |
