Cloth Face Mask Donations Exceed 2020 Goal Thanks to the Community
T
hanks to the incredibly generous support from our community, Fairfax County has exceeded its goal this year for cloth face mask donations.
In total, 77,010 cloth face coverings were donated and distributed this year. To provide free masks to the most vulnerable, including low-income families, the county put out a call in May for the community’s help to sew and donate 65,000 masks for children and adults.
Individuals, civic organizations, nonprofits and faith-based communities fulfilled the need — including the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center, Congregation Beth Emeth, Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, GFWC Western Fairfax Woman’s Club, Cameron Parish Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, and Communities of Trust and Nurturing Families, just to name a few.
Volunteer Fairfax also played a critical role in managing, collecting and distributing the masks.
The donated masks were distributed to about 70 community-based, faith-based and nonprofit organizations that serve the most vulnerable in Fairfax County. Masks were also given away at 34 community COVID testing events and by the county’s CareVan, a mobile, human services delivery vehicle.
If you still have cloth face masks you’d like to donate, they are still being accepted at each Fairfax County police station. Each station has a donation bin for you to place your items.
