Pay

Salary Range:  $4,462 to $5,872 per month.
Starting salary is $4,462 to $5,429 (depending on qualifications), plus full benefits package. 
  
Hillsboro Public Library seeks a motivated individual who is excited about working for a vibrant and thriving City and Library. We are currently recruiting for a Readers' Advisory Librarian, someone with an infectious enthusiasm, love of reading, and a desire to continually hone their craft through experimentation, learning, and training. The primary focus of this Librarian position is to provide direct patron service, plan and deliver library programs, work alongside a collaborative collection development team, develop training and learning materials, and look through a usability lens to expand our resources to readers in our community. You will work in a variety of settings both inside and outside libraries, and you may work at our Brookwood or Shute Park Library locations. You will serve diverse patrons by developing and implementing programs and services; answering reference and readers' advisory questions; and developing materials to engage and delight readers. This position requires evening and weekend work.

General Statement of Duties
The principal function of an employee in this class is to focus on designing, implementing, and maintaining Library collections; reviewing best practices in literacy, Library programming, customer service, and trends;  reviews data and develops reports; resolves customer inquiries and complaints and, as assigned, assists in budget preparation and tracking; and participates in special projects and system-wide initiatives.

Examples of Essential Work

This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the department.
• Responds to library patron inquiries and reference needs; provides library reference and advisory services to library patrons; provides research to patron requests; advises and/or recommends materials, resources, and alternative information sources; resolves issues or complaints or refers patron to appropriate contact or staff member.
• Provides patrons and staff with technical guidance and instruction in the use of library resources including: library catalog; website; databases; computers; software; various related technology and equipment; and online and print resource materials.  May provide guidance and direction to volunteers.
• Assists in library collection development; researches and reviews publications; selects, orders and/or maintains library materials; determines material collection categories; and prepares collection areas for new materials.
• Researches information needs and identifies resources; assists patrons in selecting appropriate materials; recommends and assists in providing reference materials, resources, and referrals.
• Plans, creates, provides and/or oversees library programming for instructional, educational, informative, and/or recreational needs; selects and schedules programs; and negotiates provider fees.
• Provides community outreach efforts and programs; attends community gathering, civic events and visits schools to present and promote library and information resources.
• Creates displays, lists, reports, promotional and related materials to provide customer awareness and resource accessibility; maintains website and social media accounts to meet customer needs.
• Manage records and information in any format, in accordance with applicable statutes, regulations and City policy, guidance and records retention schedule.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Acceptable Experience and Training

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Master's degree in Library Science, Information Science or a closely related field and 6 months Library experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
Depending on assignment, some positions may require:
• Valid Driver's License and safe driving record.

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions with or without reasonable accommodation.
 
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Incumbents may be subjected to travel and environmental conditions such as disruptive people, imminent danger or a threatening environment.

 

 

The benefits package includes family medical, dental, and vision insurance, VEBA, employee life, accidental death and dismemberment, and long-term disability insurance, retirement (PERS/OPSRP and social security), holidays, vacation, sick leave, voluntary health promotion program, employee assistance program, credit union, and deferred compensation programs.  Effective January 1, 2019, the employee contribution will be $125.00 per month for full family medical and dental.

We are a busy library, currently open 64 hours per week at each of our locations. In order to best serve our community, we ask all staff to work a weekend and evening shift. The work schedule for this full time position is currently Sunday through Thursday, with a regular evening shift on Monday. Can you meet this scheduling requirement?

Hillsboro Public Library currently offers several reading programs aimed at adults but we are looking to expand and increase programming in this area. We put a high priority on learning opportunities for staff and the person in this position will be responsible for planning and leading concentrated RA training for all levels, youth and adult. Please describe your experience planning and leading staff training and share ideas for how to get staff engaged.

It is not a requirement of this position to have bilingual English/Spanish skills; however, these skills are desirable in order to better serve our community.
