Pimpernel Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 387 ratings

For centuries, the elite of the world have sought the Pimpernel everywhere. Some want to kill him, others want to hire him, but Jack Cavanaugh knows that the love/hate relationship comes with the job title.

At present, Jack is trying to dismantle an investment scheme centered in Las Vegas, but "trying" is the operative word. It's been a month since he put the face of the scheme behind bars, yet the scam is still going strong. As Jack tries to uncover who has stepped in as the new head, what miniscule evidence there is all seems to point him back to Claire Ramsey, an introverted PhD student studying at UNLV.

If ever there as an unlikely head of an investment scheme, Claire's it. She has a genius IQ, but from all Jack has seen, Claire’s intelligence is as much a blessing as a curse when paired up with her acute OCD. Claire can barely make conversation with the cute guy down the hall, which makes it hard to believe she could be the charismatic salesperson who is getting international businessmen to invest $5—50 million a pop.

So what is Jack missing? What is the real story behind Claire Ramsey? And once Jack learns it, will he be able to walk away?

Sheralyn likes to keep things light and fun, but she's also aware that life is a journey and if you're going to go through the effort of buying and reading a book, your life should better for it. So whether one of her books is designed to help you escape for a few hours or teach you a new skill, she hopes it's unforgettable...in a good way. ;)

Some random things to know about Sheralyn:

* She's a wanderer (geographically)

* She can write a novel, but doesn't have the attention span for one page in a journal

* She vehemently disagrees with Stephen King's stance that authors should not watch TV

* She is pretty much incapable of sleeping before midnight

That about covers it. Hope you enjoy the books!

I feel like I need hours and hours to pour out all my thoughts for this book. Unfortunately, I only have a couple minutes so this will be short and sweet. Unlike my normal rambling reviews. ;-)

I had so much going on this last week that this book felt like it was dragging me slowly along when all I wanted was to curl up with it and devour it right away. But, it did allow me to savor and think about parts of it, so I guess it was an ok thing to have it take me longer to read. I would try to sit and read a couple pages at the end of the day, but after running nonstop and late nights and long days, I'd reread the same sentence and be fast asleep. Talk about depressing when all you want to do is read a page. LOL! But I persisted and finally was able to read all the reveals and discover all the secrets.

Let me tell you, this book! Wow! It's not at all what I was expecting, and yet it was. But I didn't see it coming. Sheralyn Pratt did a fantabulous job throwing the scent off the trail, so to speak, and casting doubt all over the place. Phew! I'm ready to re-read it and dive into the next book too! I feel pretty lucky that I don't have to wait for the book to be released to enjoy it. Now I just need life to comply too! There are two books that can go along with this. Royal Ball and Walk of Infamy. I haven't read either but from friends who have they highly recommend them.

So very glad that there were enough reviews out there telling the author they loved this book and they wanted more. At the end of the book Sheralyn Pratt tells the reader that she could write more with these characters or leave it where it ended. But she needed reviews letting her know that we loved it. I'm a little late to that bandwagon but apparently it happened because the second book, Royal Ball, was just released a week or so ago. Woohooo!

If you like suspense, action, mind games, thought provoking stories and characters, disguises, computers, geniuses, OCD characters, sweet love stories and all around good fun, this is one I would highly recommend picking up.

Content: Clean. Some moments of peril, kissing but nothing further, lies and deceit and plenty of action.

    Happy Reading!!!

This book is a continuation of the Rhea Jenson series. We meet the Pimpernel towards the end of the sixth book of the series. I love how the author was able to take one storyline to provide nine captivating titles. I wish the author's other titles were still in print. I am having withdrawals. A couple of curse words here and there but otherwise a very clean, cloak-and-dagger intriguing read.

Fans of the Scarlet Pimpernel, rejoice! We have a delightful, contemporary rehashing of that dashing daredevil and his mission to police the upper echelons of society! What if I told you that the Pimpernel's story didn't end in revolutionary France? It lived on, through his multitude of descendants, and exists in the present day. In today's modern world of corruption, social media, and technology, it takes a very different sort of Pimpernel to to keep watch on the 1% of the world's elite and wealthy.

Enter Jack, a handsome magician, with family and professional ties dating back centuries to the very first Pimpernel. Jack and his team are tasked with keeping the wealthy in check and preventing global financial catastrophes. As the book opens, Jack has his eye on Claire - a true genius and socially strained individual - who may or may not be performing one of the greatest global cons he has ever seen.

Claire, for her part, is desperate. She is desperate to finish her doctorate. Desperate to avoid dating the new guy down the hall. Desperately afraid of spiders, too. Add to that her OCD nature and conniving, social-climbing mother, and the girl already has it pretty rough. Oh, and then there's that other thing, that secret thing, she's doing that could very well destroy her life and the lives of the people she cares about. A mental breakdown is only seconds away.

This is a charming, fun story full of interesting information about magicians, facial tics, con artists, and romance. I found it way too short. And while there is a suspense/crime element to the story, I felt like it was a little underplayed - but I have an unhealthy admiration for con artists. Most readers who enjoy contemporary romance and detective TV shows will really like this. (Another reader likened it to the show Leverage.) The main characters are very interesting, with enough backstory given to make them worthy of compassion and character flaws/weaknesses that make them likeable. The secondary characters are also very intriguing and I am genuinely hoping that the author makes good on her promise in the last few pages to write a sequel. I'll read it!

I really, really enjoyed this book! I've never read a modern retelling of The Scarlet Pimpernel before (I don't know if there are even many out there, to be honest), but this one was great. I thought the modern twists were great while still keeping with the feel of the original story. I loved Claire and Jack as characters, as well as the characters on Jack's team. I thought the OCD angle on Claire was well done, too. It was an obvious part of her thought process and character without being too jarring for the reader, I think. I also really liked that Claire was psychologically atypical--I guess I like a little more representation in literature for people who think very different from others and suffer from mental disorders or are differently abled. I enjoyed the corporate espionage feel to this book while still having an engaging romance. This is my first time reading a book by this author but I'll definitely check out more of her books! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the original Scarlet Pimpernel story or for people who enjoy intrigue, highly competent and atypical characters, and sweet romance.

I really enjoyed this. I picked it up because of the title, and I expected a modern day retelling of the Scarlet Pimernel, but what I got was a super-clever adaptation, with just a few references to the original story. Not enough to interfere with the enjoyment of someone who hasn't read the S.C., I don't think. Just enough for those who did to go "I see what you did there".

I recommend this to everyone, and I really hope there will be a sequel at some point in the future.

This really kept me reading and reading, with its great mix of romance and mystery/suspense. It's the first book I've read by the author, but it definitely inspired me to try more. The writing is great, the characters felt realistic, and the content was clean - which I really appreciated. All in all, a great book. Recommended.
