New fences

With a recent announcement from the Lydney Harbour Master, these unsightly fences have been erected with the aim to prevent members of the public from accessing the North & South Piers whilst the works at the site continue.

The aim for this change of access was put into place to aid in the safety of visitors to the harbour. The North and South piers at the harbour are now closed to the public. The future of the public access to the piers are still uncertain.

The harbour master made the announcement "It is our intention to make this a permanent policy for safety reasons".
Operations at the harbour for commercial and leisure traffic are not affected.

The fences that have been erected have been confirmed will be a temporary solution for safety on the site, but the access to the piers has yet to be decided by the environment agency.

The future of allowing public access to the piers is yet to be decided, so your support is more important than ever. We need to keep the pressure on.

This fencing is not only an unsightly blot on the beautiful views at the Harbour, it restricts access for people wanting to enjoy the serene and relaxing views that are now only visible behind a gated fence.

If safety is a concern, fencing should be placed in the areas of danger i.e at the water's edge. For other safety aspects such as when the harbour is manoeuvring boats and other equipment, a temporary barrier could be put into place to improve site safety.

I feel as someone that spent many summer afternoons at the harbour growing up, the views, the fresh air and the wide open space which has always been available at the harbour, have now been revoked in favour of an unsightly metal fence.

This fencing will be removed, and access is given back to visitors that enjoy the unbroken views that once were a part of the piers at Lydney Harbour. This should be returned back to allow people access to the area, with more subtle measures put into place.

Allowing people to view the area of natural beauty through a metal fence only restricts these views, but also treats the people of Lydney like morons. The fencing will be removed, but access to the piers is yet to be decided after consultation. This is based on risk assessments and not that of the Incident and accident rate on the site.

Please sign and hopefully, our voice will be heard to get the piers access reinstated once the works are completed and the ugly wire fences removed, for a more sympathetic approach to safety improvements for the Harbour Operations.
