Enquirer names Greater Cincinnati high school athletes of the week, Sept. 8

In a vote that ended Sept. 8, Cincinnati.com readers selected the Cincinnati Enquirer Athletes of the Week from high school sports action through Sept. 3.

Fall winners will receive certificates through the athletic departments about midway through the season. The remaining certificates will be mailed at the end of the season.

The Athlete of the Week voting occurs during all high school sports seasons and recognizes athletes across all sports. Here are this week's winners for the 2023-2024 high school sports season.

Ohio football team: Middletown Madison – Middletown Madison defeated Troy Christian 38-7 and is 3-0 after going 1-19 combined in the last two seasons.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana football team: Conner – Held to just seven points in week two, Conner got its offense back in order as the Cougars beat Lafayette 34-7.

Boys fall team: Cooper cross country – Cooper scored 77 points to finish in first place at the Ryle Invitational, winning by 20 points over runner-up Villa Madonna.

Girls fall team: Ludlow girls soccer – The Lady Panthers defeated St. Patrick 9-0, Carroll County 1-0 and tied Scott 1-1 last week bringing their record to 4-3-1.

Ohio boys cross country: Lucas Towne, Turpin – He won the Lebanon Invitational with a new personal best time of 15:42.60.

Ohio girls cross country: Aleah Coster, Oak Hills – The freshman placed seventh at Lebanon with a time of 19:17.70.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana boys cross-country: Lake Durrett, St. Henry – He took sixth place at Ryle in a time of 16:46.53.

Northern Kentucky/Indiana girls cross-country: Alexandra Burg, Notre Dame Academy – The freshman was the first of three consecutive Pandas to cross the line at Ryle, doing so in 12th place in 21:29.49.

Ohio big-school football: Max Supe, Oak Hills – He had 10 catches, two for touchdowns, in the Highlanders’ 21-14 win over Colerain, which was their first over the Cardinals since 1992.

Ohio small-school football: Cohen Manning, New Richmond – He caught eight passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns in the Lions’ 48-26 win over Western Hills.

Northern Kentucky football: Gavin Lyons, Ryle – He caught seven passes for 71 yards, including a 4th & 11 conversion, and hauled in an interception against Cooper.

Field hockey: Harper Hodgett, Ursuline Academy – The junior midfielder/forward scored two goals against Fairmont Thursday. Hodgett's two goals added to her team's offensive onslaught as the Ursuline Lions cruised to a 7-0 over the Fairmont Firebirds.

Boys golf: Andrew Dennett, Badin – The junior was medalist with a 42 as Badin edged Oak Hills 173-177.

Girls golf: Kristen Link, Seton – In a tri-match with Oak Hills and Taylor, Link shot a 39 to take medalist honors while leading Seton to a win.

Ohio big-school boys soccer: Marcos Neto, Mason – He had two goals and two assists in a 6-0 win over Greater Miami Conference rival Colerain, which was the Comets’ first win of the season.

Ohio small-school boys soccer: Ian Simpson, Reading – He had five goals in a 6-0 win over Lockland.

Ohio big-school girls soccer: Meagyn Riffle, West Clermont – She scored two goals in a 3-1 win over Walnut Hills in ECC play.

Ohio small-school girls soccer: Riley Van Frank, Batavia – The sophomore keeper had eight saves as the Bulldogs shut out Wyoming 1-0. She also had three saves in a 6-0 win over Goshen.

Northern Kentucky boys soccer: Grady Noble, Conner – He scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Newport Central Catholic.

Northern Kentucky girls soccer: Catherine Wiggins, Scott – She scored a goal in each of two key district wins over Calvary Christian and Campbell County, the latter a 2-1 win in overtime.

Girls singles tennis player: Jordyn Lucas, Western Brown – She picked up a tough win at second singles in a 3-2 match win over Blanchester.

Girls doubles tennis team: Libby Morra/Ainsley McCosh, Turpin – They got a 3-2 first-doubles win over Little Miami in Eastern Cincinnati Conference play that kept the Spartans undefeated at 5-0.

Ohio big-school volleyball: Kylie Stutzman, Taylor – The freshman led the Yellow Jackets to a 2-0 week with 43 assists, 15 kills, 14 aces, 12 digs and three blocks in wins over Wyoming and Deer Park.

Ohio small-school volleyball: Avery Neth, Williamsburg – The senior posted two double-doubles of 10 kills, 10 assists and eight digs against Clinton-Massie, and 16 assists, 13 kills and eight digs against Batavia.

Northern Kentucky volleyball: Lily Dehnert, Ludlow – In wins over Bellevue and Heritage, she combined for 13 kills, seven aces, two digs and one block.

Boys water polo: Evan Preissler, Sycamore – The junior had a strong showing in two games for the Aviators last week. Preissler won four of seven swim-offs and racked up three goals and four assists in games against St. Xavier and Milford.

Girls water polo: Lindsay Brown, Milford – The senior scored four goals for the Milford Eagles last Tuesday. The Eagles faced the top-ranked Mavericks and put up a fight led by Brown's four goals in what became an 8-15 loss for Milford.
