Bengals O-line coach works out Indiana’s Saffold

Posted: March 13th, 2010 | Gil Brandt | Tags: 2010 Pro Days, Greg Middleton, Indiana, Jammie Kirlew, Matt Mayberry, Nick Polk, Rodger Saffold

Rodger Saffold (6-foot-4 5/8, 313 pounds) chose to participate solely in positional drills at Indiana’s pro day on Friday. That decision is in no way surprising given the outstanding job Saffold did at the NFL Scouting Combine, in which he was a top performer among offensive tackles in the vertical jump, the broad jump, three-cone drill and short shuttle.

He did do position drills, however, with Bengals offensive line coach Paul Alexander on hand to work woth him. Alexander is one of the league’s better offensive line coaches, and Cincinnati could use some depth.

In addition to Saffold, four other notable Hoosiers also worked out. Here is a look at how they did:

DE Greg Middleton (6-2 7/8, 261 pounds), who led the nation in sacks with 16 in 2007, ran the 40-yard dash in 5.08 and 5.11 seconds, had a 4.82-second short shuttle and a 7.74-second three-cone drill. He did not do the bench press due to a right shoulder injury.

S Nick Polk (5-11 1/8, 218) ran a 4.63 and 4.64 in the 40, had a 39-inch vertical, a 4.45 short shuttle, a 7.24 three-cone drill and 15 repititions in the bench press at 225 pounds.

DE Jammie Kirlew (6-1 1/4, 261) ran a pair of 5.03 40-yard dashes, had a 34-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot, 2-inch broad jump, a 4.65 short shuttle, a 7.49 three-cone drill, and 29 bench press reps.

LB Matt Mayberry ran a 4.57 and 4.58 in the 40, had a 9-foot broad jump, a 4.32 short, a 7.07 three-cone and did 24 bench press reps.
Those wanting to dissect Tim Tebow's new throwing motion won't have to hope for television coverage of Florida's Pro Day March 17.

That's because the University of Florida is opening up the event for fans to attend.

Obviously expecting large numbers, the doors will open to spectators at 8:30 am (local time) at Ben Hill Griffen Stadium in Gainesville. The on-field workout, itself, however, won't begin until 10 am.

Tebow, is, of course, the main attraction, but cornerback Joe Haden may have just as much on the line. He'll be hoping to turn in a much faster time in the 40-yard dash after running a disappointingly slow 4.58 at the Combine.

The pressure will also be on inside linebacker Brandon Spikes, who surprised some scouts with his decision to only do some portions of the workout in Indianapolis. Plagued by questions about his pure speed, Spikes' time in the 40-yard dash and fluidity in coverage drills could determine whether he makes the second round or falls to the mid third or lower.

Tight end Aaron Hernandez didn't participate in any of the drills at the Combine, so he, too, has a lot riding on his performance March 17.

Other highly touted Gator players, including defensive end Carlos Dunlap, center Maurkice Pouncey, wide receiver Riley Cooper and safety Major Wright will likely participate in some drills, but did many of the timed drills in Indianapolis.

Florida's decision to open the event up to fans will make the Pro Day a circus-like atmosphere for scouts.

That said, while many college teams elect to make their Pro Days a private affair for just scouts, players and select media, the move is hardly unprecedented.

Spectators were allowed to watch from the stands at the USC Pro Days I've attended each of the past two years.
The Cleveland Browns, who have been everywhere during this pro day season, gave several players special attention at Clemson’s pro day on March 11.

Cleveland receivers coach George McDonald stayed after the event to individually work out WR Jacoby Ford, and Browns defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson stayed an extra day to work out defensive backs Crezdon Butler and Chris Chancellor on Friday.

The Browns are also expected to return to Clemson this week, so they can work out DE Ricky Sapp and LB Kavell Conner.

Despite all of the individual work, Clemson’s pro day actually lacked a whole lot of action. All 32 teams had representatives on hand, but the Tigers’ best prospects stood on most of their workout numbers from the NFL Scouting Combine.

In all, 13 players worked out ont indoors on TartanTurf and did position drills outdoors on grass.

RB C.J. Spiller (5-foot-10 1/4, 196 pounds) had a 36-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot, 6-inch broad jump, but kept the rest of his numbers from the combine. Ford had a 36-inch vertical jump and stuck to his combine numbers for everything else.

Sapp, Conner, Chancellor and Butler stood on all of their combine numbers.

Two noteworthy prospects who were not at the combine and had impressive workouts were G Thomas Austin and TE Michael Palmer.

Austin (6-2 7/8, 306) ran the 40-yard dash in 5.36 and 5.41 seconds, had a 28-inch vertical jump, 7-8 broad jump and did 33 bench press repetitions.

Palmer (6-4 3/8, 250) ran the 40-yard dash in 4.78 and 4.81 seconds, had a 29 1/2-inch vertical jump, 9-4 broad jump and did 20 bench press reps.

Shuttles runs and three-cone drills were not run due to rainy conditions.
Reports are that Spiller tore it up even in the rain for scouts.
jreff...thanks for posting the writeups. I'm just curious where are you getting them from?
Morgan Burnett worked out really well at his pro day. He had a 4.45 40 with a 39.5 vertical, and had an 11 foot broad jump.
I am a huge Burnett fan, and I think his stock is back on the rise, and he should end up being an early second round pick.

Haden has his pro day this Wednesday. If he improves his 40 he won't make it to us at #13. So, all you Haden supporters hope he runs another 4.6 so he'll drop to us.

MM wrote that if he doesn't run a good 40 then we won't draft him because we don't need another slow CB.

If Haden falls to the 49ers at 13 do they take him?

Not unless runs like a crazy man at his pro day. I don't think the 49ers will take a slow cornerback in the first round.

If he runs a 4.5 or better I bet we take him if he's there.

Tore what up? he only did the vertical leap and broad jump.

For timed drills yes, but I'm sure he did some positional stuff.

He stayed and did drills also. NFL Network said he was very impressive. Even in the rain, he was catching everything and you could really see his quickness and change of direction skills. My impression was that they put him through a similar workout to what Percy Harvin did when he came out. Spiller apparently looked just as good receiving as he did running.

He helped himself and could of moved into the top 10.

He might be there at 13 even if he does run a 4.5. I think Cleveland was a likely landing spot but if Claussen is there I think they grab him instead. I really would love to get this guy even though there is a lot of hate for him in the Zone right now.
Bo Marchionte, of NFLDraftBible.com, reports Saginaw Valley State DE Robert Calloway measured in at his Pro Day with a height of 6-foot-4, 322 pounds. He measured a 30 1/2-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-2 broad jump and completed 25 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.

Dude has some good measureables for a man his size.
