Is Samsung Planning A Dual Display Galaxy Smartphone?

This article is more than 5 years old.

Expect anger when the Galaxy Note 9 is released soon. Despite some sizeable upgrades, Samsung will be accused of limited ambition and restricting the best features. But new information reveals the company has far more ambitious plans…

Credit for the discovery goes to eagled-eyed Dutch site MobielKopen who has uncovered plans Samsung submitted for a radical new smartphone design which has no bezels on three sizes and only a tiny top bezel. And yes, Samsung is achieving this without a notch.

Interestingly, the core design does appear to take one of Apple’s most innovative features from the iPhone X and push it even further. Whereas Apple achieves almost no ‘chin’ on the iPhone X thanks to curving the display around the bottom of the phone and putting the connectors in the back, Samsung’s plan is to simply keep expanding the display halfway down the back.

Why? Because then the rear display allows the powerful main rear camera to be used for selfies, which eliminates the need for a space-consuming front camera or breakable pop-up cameras like the Vivo Nex and Oppo Find X. This is genius.

Another plus is the absence of a physical fingerprint scanner. With Samsung known to be pushing this under the display in its next major phone, it is safe to assume that is also the case here.

If there is a downside to the new design, it is that there is no headphone jack. Samsung has been one of an ever-smaller number of phone makers to keep faith with the jack and it has gained a lot of credit for this. But, ultimately, we all know the future is wireless.

With Samsung known to be planning a similarly radical redesign for the Galaxy S10 in early 2019, we might not have to wait long to see the company’s vision fulfilled. And if you think that sounds far-fetched, then you haven’t see what Samsung will unveil straight afterwards
