Combat Theater Vote 2 June 9, 3061 Shui Ivanov brushed his fingers across the screen of his noteputer, calling up the day’s financial reports. He sat with the utmost care not to wrinkle the expensively-tailored suit that clung to his slight frame. He looked like any other young executive passenger aboard the Princess-class DropShip Chǎngníng. So close to Sian’s HPG hub, the updates were mostly accurate, differing only from Shui’s projections by only a few percentage points in most areas. “Ah, Vice President Xing,” an older man in a finely-tailored gray suit took a seat across from the café-style table at which Shui sat. Shui waited patiently while the newcomer waved over one of the DropShip’s attractive young waitresses and ordered a glass of tea and two shots of the famed Glasgow whiskey. A strange combination. Unless he felt like celebrating. “You’re in a fine mood today, Executor Li,” Shui asked politely. “Has something fortunate happened?” “Quite fortunate indeed, Vice President Xing!” The older man, Li, took a sip of his tea and composed himself. “Lord Guanyu Xu has approved the expansion of servitor working hours at our plant from twelve to sixteen hours, and citizen hours from ten to fourteen! We’ll have no trouble staying well above the quotas Detroit Consolidated MechWorks set when they leased us the production rights for their new Anubis BattleMech.” “Per the licensing agreement, you’re permitted to sell any ‘Mech beyond your quota directly, correct?” “Just so,” Li nodded. “Thus far, Detroit MechWorks’ quotas have nearly perfectly matched our production, but now the gates are opened. We’ll achieve unrivaled profits—with the right investors, perhaps we will even have enough to develop a BattleMech of our own!” “Perhaps,” Shui affirmed without agreement. “That is why my firm seeks to deepen our economic ties. Have you already arranged for a buyer? If not, we know of several—” “That’s the beauty of it,” Li laughed heartily, compelling Shui to laugh along with him. “Lord Xu has expressed a keen interest in our over-production. Any excess BattleMechs we produce we do not even need to ship offworld, Lord Xu will buy them at any price.” “Ah, even better,” Shui smiled politely. “All the profit, virtually none of the overhead. A fine situation indeed.” Li slid one of the shot glasses across the table to Shui, and raised his own as Shui took it up the offering. Gifts of alcohol were the lubrication upon which nearly all business was conducted. That hadn’t changed in thousands of years of human history. Shui regarded the ebony whiskey with interest. Glasgow was renowned for its alcohol, the most expensive of which was stored in barrels of a rare native wood that gave the drink a coal black color after it had properly aged. Export of Ebony Whiskey was closely controlled, and a single bottle could cost three hundred-thousand Yuan or more. “To our mutual success,” Li proclaimed. “And to your health, Vice President Xing.” “To your health, Executor Li,” Shui replied amiably, “and to victory.” ************************************************************ “Vice President Xing,” Colonel Ah Wong didn’t rise from behind her Glasgow Ebony desk. The impressive piece of furniture was carved from a single trunk of wood, and had clearly been installed generations past, when the Carntyne Military Base had been first constructed. Too large to fit through the door, and too opulent for such a setting, the desk spoke of wealth the Capellan Confederation hadn’t enjoyed since the fall of the Star League. Colonel Ah Wong kept it fastidiously clean, but used it all the same. The pragmatism of the military never ceased to amaze. Shui Ivanov set his credentials down on the desk. The Colonel stiffened, then rose swiftly and stood at attention. A bead of sweat rolled down her brow, but her dark brown eyes met his and after a moment Shui nodded. She’d shown an appropriate amount of fear, neither too much nor too little. That was gratifying, it meant she likely had nothing to do with Lord Xu’s machinations. “Colonel Ah Wong. Two minor engagements since becoming the first commanding officer of the reborn Second Liao Lancers. Graduated fourth in class from the Liao Conservatory of Military Arts. A capable but unspectacular officer in nearly all respects.” “Mandarin,” She stiffened, taking his matter-of-fact statements as an insult. “You have me at a disadvantage.” “Yes,” Shui agreed happily. “We understand one another. There is a traitor amassing a personal army here on Glasgow. For the good of the Capellan Confederation, you are to eliminate him.” A) Regulus Ascendant – The Principality of Regulan has been growing increasingly bold, probing the Capellan-held Duchy of Oriente for weaknesses. The 9th Regulan Hussars have launched a full scale invasion of Dayr Khuna in the hopes of being the first to take a world back from the Capellan Confederation. B) Invasion of Taygeta – The Taurian Concordat has launched an assault to retake Taygeta from the Capellan Confederation. Spearheaded by the 2nd Taurian Guards, can this attack succeed where so many others have failed? C) Mandarin’s Edict – Lord Guanyu Xu is hording BattleMechs, violating the Capellan Confederation’s labor laws, and exploiting the Confederation for his own benefit. By the order of Mandarin Shui Ivanov, Lord Xu is a traitor to the Confederation and must be made to face the Peoples’ Justice.

A - Regulus Strikes Again! It's time for the FWL to hit back. It's what Rolling Thunder would want us to do. The 9th Regulan Hussars will strike the first blow in the Liberation of Oriente. It will be a struggle, to be sure, but we cannot let the Free Worlds League suffer the ignominy of one of their member states being under the Capellan yoke one second longer than we have to. Every time this thread has picked Marik, it's been the right choice, and I don't see any way that's gonna change now. It's time to take Dayr Khuna back. For Regulus, for the League, for Freedom. And for Rolling Thunder. Defiance Industries fucked around with this message at 01:54 on Aug 2, 2018 |

C) Mandarin’s Edict I'm obviously loathe to back one of the options that attacks the Confederation, and how can I resist a chance to uphold the virtues of the new Confederation to ensure they don't backslide into corruption and exploitation? Might as well give Sun Wu the best chance we can to succeed in his reforms.

I might as well make a pitch for option C: Many of you dislike the Cappellan Confederation, for a variety of potentially valid reasons. They're evil, their leaders are crazy, they warcrime, etc. What you have here is a potential to actually do something about that. Not by coming and taking their poo poo (though you can do that too if you want to), but by actually backing a leader who genuinely gives a poo poo about the people he leads as more than just a resource to be exploited. But that is undoubtedly an unpopular position for the nobility, as it would be in any of the Great Houses. Sun Wu needs to show strength, and that exploitation and insurrection will not be tolerated. This is your chance to potentially help turn the CapCon from "evil racist Chinese devil-men" into a place where people have the potential to be treated well. I'm sure there will be stumbling blocks along the way, and who knows if it will succeed in the long run. But without action now, it won't succeed in the short term either. I'm sure some of you are thinking it's all a scam. Could be that too, I guess. We don't know. But Sun Wu is sticking his neck out there pretty far as it is, even before sending out one of his Mandarin's out to deal with the Nobility who are too firmly entrenched in the "old ways". We already know he's willing to pay ransom for even the lowliest of prisoners, and offer it in return to his enemies. We know that the prisoners who are not ransomed aren't even executed, they're shipped out to neutral territory and let to go their own way. Be the change you want to see. Vote C.

Even a fully-reformed CapCon will still be a far more restrictive state than the FWL at its darkest. It's time for them to take back what's theirs.
