A Winter Park Police sergeant was arrested on grand-theft charges Friday after he was accused of stealing property from a dead person, authorities said.
The allegations against Sgt. Frank Cowart surfaced on March 13, police spokeswoman Pam Marcum said. Cowart was accused of taking personal property belonging to the victim of a death investigation in 2011, she said.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation.
Cowart has worked at the Police Department since 2002 and was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division when the allegations were made.
On March 15, he was placed on administrative leave until the administrative investigation at Winter Park Police Department was concluded.
The internal investigation is still pending, Marcum said.
