About a hundred years ago, I was traveling at night from Ft Benning to Ft Rucker to visit a buddy. I came onto post through a back gate, IIRC. It’s just a two lane road through the woods. Anyhow, a crew was out training that night and their task was a tactical road crossing for their ( Army camouflage painted ) fuel trucks. And they were tactical- all lights were blacked out and not soul was seen. They were doing great, except for the fact that this was a public road and young LT LFB was coming in at 55 mph.
Don’t ask me how, but I missed it. I skidded my truck to a halt and check to see if my drawers were still dry. Then I did something totally out of character. I found the NCO in charge ( a young E6 ) flashed my military ID and proceeded to chew him out. Tactical training is great. But moving a 5000 gallon fuel truck across a public road in total darkness without any warning systems was just suicidal.
Not a fan of lawyers here, but definitely called for in this instance. I cannot imagine there were no injuries. Driver is seen removing ignition key, so evidently he survived what could have been a decapitation. Workers were stupid not to post a warning. Any jury seeing the dash cam video would rule in favor of plaintiff. Unless of course road was blocked/warning posted further back.
You see two vehicles on either side of the road slow the fuck down. New a kid that got decapitaed as the semi in the on coming lane was backing in a trailer across the road. It was sunset so he could not see past the headlights of the truck. Not much he could have done, but the one in the video was avoidable with a little sense.
Driving in the mountains from Puebla to Mexico city in the middle of the night- raining while dodging slow moving trucks without any lights - tons of fun... not!
A few years ago in Colorado some hunters pulled a deer out of the trees using a winch attached to a truck across the road. I won't go into detail about what happened to the motorcyclist that hit the cable.
Riding murdercycle I come around the corner at a good clip and out of corner of my eye I spy a child's kite on a lawn. About 2 nanoseconds later I jam on the brakes. Even still the kite string cut a nice slice across my neck drawing blood. The kite string was monofilament. That was a very close call.
