Major fire breaks out on Seven Islands Shipping MR tanker

A major fire broke out on yesterday evening around 6pm onboard 2000-built MR tanker Genessa while it was anchored off Kandla, India.

 

The vessel, owned by Mumbai-based Seven Islands Shipping, had been travelling from Mumbai loaded with 30,000 tonnes of diesel.

 

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence said that all 26 crewmembers were evacuated from the vessel, two of them with burns, and the fire was eventually brought under control.

 

In an update this morning, the ministry said water sampling taken around the vessel showed no sign of an oil spill. Three coast guard vessel and nine tugs are still involved in ongoing firefighting operations.
