1 Presentation

1.1 Introduction

Samyang has 10 manual lenses for Sony APSC bodies with E mount like A6000: 6 out of 10 were specially designed for mirrorless and achieve globally very good performances with a small size and reasonable price. All have been tested here

Samyang dispose de près de 10 objectifs manuel pour les boitiers Sony E APS-C comme le A6000. 6 de ces 10 objectifs ont été spécialement conçus pour les hybrides et présentent globalement de très bonne performances avec un format assez compact et un prix raisonnable

This is a fully manual lenses with aperture control on the lens (with click) and manual focusing ring, No Exif are transmitted to the body

The Aperture ring is large and easy to manipulate to do the focus with the right level of dampening

The build quality is very good all in metal. The lens is quite compact and well balanced on the A6000

C’est une optique entièrement manuelle avec contrôle de l’ouverture par bague sur l’objectif (avec clics) et bague de mise au point manuelle. Pas d’exif transmis au boitier

La qualité de construction est très bonne tout en métal. L’objectif est compact et bien équilibré sur le A6000

La bague de mise au point est large et agréable à manipuler

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A6000 with its 24 Mpix, to check image crop with good quality look at full size pictures here : Samyang 21mm F1.4 ED UMC CS

• Centre : very good at  F1.4, Excellent as of F2 and until F8, very good at F11 , diffraction at F16
• Borders : good from F1.4-F2, Very good at F2.8 , Excellent from F4 to F8, Very good at F11, diffraction at F16

2.2 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations / distorsion

• Lens fall off : There is visible light fall off at F1.4 that quickly decrease to become invisible at F2.8
• Chromatic aberrations are quite low but visible in some situations
• Distorsion : is visible but Lightroom has a lens profile for this lens that corrects it

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion

• Le vignettage : lvisible à pleine ouverture il devient invisible à F2.8
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont faibles mais présentes à pleine ouverture face au soleil
• Distorsion : visible mais lightroom dispose de profils d’objectifs pour tous les Samyang manuels, donc aucun souci

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The bokeh balls are really good at F1.4 : well rounded and soft
• The background blur is nice and soft
• Color rendition is very good
• Les ronds de bokeh sont bons : circulaires et doux à F1.4
• Le flou d’arrière plan est beau et relativement doux
• Le rendu des couleurs est bon et très naturel

5 Conclusion

The Samyang 21mm F1.4 ED AS UMC for Sony E mount is an excellent manual lens that is really worth to discover.

It was specially designed for mirrorless and the lens score very good to excellent in all domains

• Compact & lightweight
• Excellent sharpness
• Nice Bokeh and background blur
• Very natural color rendition
• Lens fall off , distorsion and CA low or that can be corrected automatically
• Very good build quality
• Reasonable price of max 400 euros

Alternatives

• Sigma 19mm F2.8 DN Art (APS-C): (180 euros) with AF, very good performances but much lower aperture and less sharp , half the price
• Sony E 20mm F2.8 (320 euros): pancake lens with relatively poor performances
• Zonlai 22mm F1.8 : (170 euros) : excellent background blur and color rendition, corners are quite soft until F5.6 , good to very good in the centre 

If you are not afraid of the manual focus then the Samyang 21mm F1.4 ED UMC CS is certainly the best lens available for this +/-20mm focal length for APS-C 

Highly recommended

Note that other tests on internet show sometimes less good performances in the corners. There is certainly some variability in term of build quality that affect the performance

5 Conclusion

Le Samyang 21mm F1.4 ED AS UMC pour Sony E mount est une excellente optique Manuelle qui vaut le détour. 

Cette optique a été spécialement conçue pour les hybrides et elle affiche de très bonnes à excellentes performances dans tous les domaines

• Légère et compacte
• Piqué excellent
• Beau bokeh et flou d’arrière plan
• Rendu des couleur très naturel
• Très bonne qualité de construction
• Vignettage , distortion et AC limitées ou corrigible automatiquement
• Prix raisonnable de max 400 euros

Alternatives

• Sigma 19mm F2.8 DN Art (APS-C): (180 euros) avec autofocus , de très bonnes performance mais un piqué inférieur au Samyang ainsi qu’une ouverture bien plus faible mais un prix divisé par deux
• Sony E 20mm F2.8 (320 euros): un objectif pancake avec des performances décevantes
• Zonlai 22mm F1.8 : (170 euros) : d’excellent flous d’arrières plans et un beau rendu des couleurs assez chaud. Les coins sont assez faibles mais le centre est bon à très bon 

Si vous n’avez pas peur des optiques manuelles , alors ce Samyang 21mm F.4 ED UMC CS est certainement l’une des meilleures optiques disponible autour des 20mm de focale sur Sony APS-C 

Un maître achat

N.B. en regardant d’autres tests sur le net  je vois des résultats moins bons en terme de piqué dans les coins , il y a sans doute une certaine variabilité en terme de performances entre les différents exemplaires de cette optique
