1 Presentation

Le Voigtländer 12mm est le 3ème des 3 objectifs ultra grand angle de Voigtlander

les 2 autres étant :

• Voigtländer 10mm F5.6 Heliar Hyper Wide Aspherical
• Voigtländer 12mm F5.6 Ultra Wide Heliar E Aspherical III

Point commun à toute la série

• une construction métallique exemplaire : superbe finition
• pare soleil fixe métallique
• bague de diaphragme avec crants avec avec clicks pour la photo ou souple pour la video (Pour permuter entre les deux modes il faut tourner de 180° la peine bague à l’avant muni d’un train jaune)
• un bouchon de protection légèrement bombé aussi tout en métal satiné
• pas de possibilité de rajouter de filtre vu la courbure de la lentille frontale sauf sur le 15mm
• une bague de mise au point fluide, bien cranté , pivotant sur 90° , avec suffisamment de résistance (un peu comme une rotule vidéo) pour une mise au point manuelle très précise. Ce sont les bagues les plus agréables que j’ai pu manipuler jusqu’à présent
• une échelle de profondeur de champ gravée sur le fut
• léger mais dense, discret

The Voigtländer 15mm is the 3rd lens out of the 3 ultra wide angle lenses from Voigtländer, the others being

The common points to all 3 lenses are

• a metal construction, with perfect build : superb finish
• a fixed metal lenshood
• an aperture ring with either clicks for photos or fluid for video. To switch you need to rate a front ring with a yellow label by 180°
• a lens cap also in metal with a beautiful satin finish
• no filter possible due to the curvature of the lens except on the 15mm
• a focusing ring fluid, rotating on 90% with sufficient resistance to have a very efficient and enjoyable manual focusing
• a depth of scale is engraved on the barrel
• light, dense, discret

Mise au point

2 Performances

2.1 Piqué / Sharpness

Le piqué au centre est bon dès la pleine ouverture et ce jusque F11 , les coins sont aussi bon même si en retrait par rapport au centre, les bords s’améliore à F8 , F11

A partir de F16 le piqué diminue à cause de la diffraction

Par rapport au Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G ses performances sont toutefois inférieures, le FE12-24 étant exceptionnellement piqué.

Dans la pratique toutefois en extérieur ses différences entre les 2 objectifs sont beaucoup plus faibles que dans un test comme celui ci

The sharpness is good wide open and until F11, corner are also good even if lower than the centre. Corners get better at F8 F11. As from F16 sharpness is decreasing

Compared to the Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G , its performance are however lower, the 12-24 being exceptionally sharp for a ultra wide lens

In the practice (outside or indoor with big room) the sharpness difference is less noticeable than in such a test made on tripod

2.2 Distorsion / Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques

• Le vignettage est important mais très bien corrigé par Lightroom
• La distorsion est faible pour un ultra grand angle
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont aussi très bien corrigées par Lightroom
• Très bonne résistance au flare

2.2 Lens fall off, distorsion, CA, flare

• Lens fall off is present but well corrected by Lightroom
• Distorsion is very low for an ultra wide angle
• CA are also minor and very well corrected by Lightroom
• Very good flare resistance

2.4 Bokeh

Le Bokeh à pleine ouverture est assez doux bien que les flous d’artère plans soit assez limités avec un tel grand angle

Bokeh is smooth wide open, but the blur of the background is quite limited with such a wide angle

4 Conclusion

Dans la pratique le Voigtländer 15mm est très agréable à utiliser et donne de très bon résultats

Ses performances permettront sans problème un A3 parfait et un excellent A2 , toutefois il montre ses limites sur un A7RII si l’on veut faire par exemple un poster 100 * 150 cm et un Sony FE 12-24mm fait mieux en terme de piqué et de rendu des couleurs

Que choisir finalement entre les 3 Voigtländer et le zoom Sony FE 12-24G ?

• le 10mm est vraiment très très grand angle son usage est assez particulier
• si vous avez déjà un 16-35 F4 , le 12mm vient le compléter avec un ultra grand angle de grande qualité très compact
• si vous n’avez ni 16-35 ni aucune autre optique ultra grand angle < 21mm , le Voigltander 15mm est plus généraliste
• Si enfin vous envisager d’acheter le 12 et le 15mm , il vaut mieux alors prendre le zoom Sony 12-24 (2000 euros)  encore meilleur optiquement sauf si vous rechercher la compacité et la discrétion et que vous est un aficionado de la mise au point manuelle

4 Conclusion

In the real world the Voigtländer 15mm is a very enjoyable lens to use , its manual focus is a pleasure and results are very good

Its performance will allow without a doubt an excellent A3 and a very good A2. But the les show its limit on an A7RII with 42Mpix and if you want to go bigger (e.g. 100cm x 150cm) , the Sony FE 12-24 will deliver superior performance and a tad better color rendition

Which lens to choose among the 3 Voigtländer & the zoom Sony FE 12-24G ?

• the 10mm is really very very wide. You need to have the use of it
• if you already got a 16-35 F4 , the 12mm is completing it very nicely with a very good compact lens
• if you don’t have any 16-35 and you widest lens is a 24mm , then the Voigltänder 15mm will be more appropriate as more easy to use and more versatile for various landscapes, architecture subjects
• finally if you want to buy both the 12 & the 15mm , you better go for the sony fe 12-24 Zoom (2000 euros) which is better optically and quite compact and light for an ultra wide zoom,  unless you prefer the compact , vintage look and manual focus of the Voigtländer serie
