Greek shipping in Labour Day shutdown
Greek shipping is in shutdown today. A 24-hour strike by Greek seamen to mark Labour Day today has paralysed shipping across the country.
“We are raising a voice of protest and demand the immediate resolution of the pension issue, the withdrawal of the reduced special crew compositions with the abolition of Law 4150/2013, the signing of collective agreements, the measures to tackle unemployment and the prompt and correct payment of due earnings to crews,” an announcement from the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation stated.
The Panhellenic Union of Tugs and Lifeguards, as well as dockworkers, are also participating in the Labour Day strike.
Another Mediterranean nation is also bracing itself for a May maritime shutdown. Dockworkers in Italy are planning a strike on May 11, shutting down all ports for the day, citing a need to improve safety.
