For this review I have made the usual handling and sharpness tests on a A7RII but real life testing/photos was made by Lionel Favre a friend from Alphadxd.fr forum on a A7II
My lens was lent to me for a few days by PCH (www.pch.be)

1 Presentation

- Lens hood included (was not in my test lens)
- No electrical contact : no aperture or lens info transmitted to the body
- Minimal working distance : 0,47cm from front lens
The construction is very good all in metal. The 2 rings (aperture and focusing) have sufficient resistance , not too hard not too fluid.
The aperture ring has no click (which could be good for video) but as there is no transmission of aperture info to the body (as there is no electrical contacts), you never known what aperture is selected without looking at the lens , and you always have the risk to touch and move the aperture ring without noticing it

La construction est solide tout en métal et inspire confiance
Les 2 bagues : ouverture et mise au point sont crénelées et agréable à l’usage , ni trop dures ni trop molles.
La bague d’ouverture n’est pas crantée elle est donc fluide (bien pour de la vidéo) mais comme l’information d’ouverture n’est pas transmise au boitier il faudra bien vérifier que l’on a pas par erreur changé l’ouverture au lieu de la mise au point
2 Optical performances / Performances optiques
2.1 Sharpness / Piqué
The tests were made on a Sony A7RII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix
- In the centre , the lens is soft wide open, average at F5.6 and good from F8 to F16, above diffraction decreases sharpness
- Borders and corners : very soft at F4, soft up to F8, average at F11
- The lens is really usable between F8 and F16 to exploit the 42 Mpix of the A7RII , if you have a 24Mpix , F5.6 could be usable as well
Les tests on été effectué sur un A7RII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix
- Au centre l’objectif est mou à pleine ouverture, moyen à F5.6 , bon de F8 à F16, puis la diffraction diminue le piqué
- Dans les bords et les coins, l’objectif est très mou à F4, mou jusque F8, moyen à F11 jusque F22
- L’objectif n’est donc vraiment utilisable en exploitant le potentiel du A7RII que de F8 à F16 avec son optimal à F11, si l’on se contente de 24Mpix le F5.6 est lui aussi exploitable

2.4 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations / distorsion / sunstars
- At F4 lens fall off is very visible , it is still visible à F5.6 and F8 but can be corrected manually in Lightroom
- Distorsion is visible in moustache so it is quite difficult to correct it fully , if you correct it for barrel distorsion then you got some issue in the border (see below) and theres is no Lightroom lens profile
- Shift is possible but with no rotation and cause an heavy vignetting on a full frame
- Chromatic aberrations were quite low except in some corners
- Flare resistance is average
- Sunstars are visible if you point the lens to the well defined light sources like the sun. The rays become more defined as you close the aperture. You like it or not, it is a matter of taste
2.4 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / effets d’étoiles
- Le vignettage est très visible à F4, il s’amenuise à F5.6 et F8 pour presque disparaitre à F11. Il peut être corrigé en Lightroom
- La distorsion est très visible et en moustache donc difficile à corriger, il n’y a pas de profil de correction d’objectif disponible en Lightroom
- Les aberrations chromatiques sont peu visibles sauf peut être dans certains coins
- La résistance au flare est moyenne
- Des rayons en étoiles sont visibles si l’objectif est pointé vers des sources lumineuses très ponctuelles (soleil , lampadaires). Ces rayons sont plus précis si l’on ferme l’ouverture jusque F11. C’est un effet qu’on aime ou non selon ses goûts

2.5 Bokeh / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs
Thanks to its 14 blades aperture , the bokeh is quite smooth and pleasing in general. See below the evolution of the blur at the various apertures
F8 seems a good compromise for macro shot to keep a blurry background
In good lightning conditions the color rendition is quite good and pleasing
Grace à son diaphragme à 14 lamelles, le bokeh est relativement doux et plaisant. Voir ci dessous l’évolution du flou d’arrière plan
F8 semble un bon compromis en macro pour garder un fond flou agréable
Dans de bonnes conditions de lumière le rendu des couleurs est assez agréable

The Laowa 15 mm F4 Macro 1:1 is a unique lens
As wide angle lens it is quite average
- the sharpness is soft wide open
- it has weak angles up to F11
- heavy lens fall off
- “moustache” distorsion with no lens profile
- no electrical contact
If you want to shoot wide angle and you don’t care about the macro aspect, there are numerous alternatives with much better performance:
It’s unique character is revealed in wide angle macro shoots, where it allows to get a flower or an insect very big while keeping a good image of the surrounding background and with a pleasing blur
It is quite difficult to get some good results
- you should get a calm subject not afraid of being very close to the front lens (<1 cm) to reach the 1:1 ratio
- the size of the lens can be an obstacle close to the ground
- the subject is often blocking the light when very close to the lens
- you should be quite stable ( a tripod may help in that matter)
I would only recommend this lens to macro shooters that wants to get creative

4 Conclusion
Le Laowa 15mm F4 Macro 1:1 est un objectif unique
Comme objectif grand angle il est très moyen
- piqué mou à peine ouverture, angles faible jusque F11
- fort vignettage
- distorsion en moustache sans profil de correction
- objectif sans contact électrique
Si vous n’êtes intéressé que par l’aspect grand angle, de nombreuses alternatives existent avec de meilleures performances
Son vrai caractère se révèle en mode macro où il permet d’avoir en gros plan une fleur ou un insecte tout en montrant le contexte dans lequel le sujet a été pris, tout cela avec un arrière plan assez agréable et flou
Il est assez difficile d’obtenir de bons résultats:
- il vous faudra un sujet assez peu farouche ou statique: avec un 15mm on s’approche à moins de 1 cm du sujet pour atteindre le rapport 1:1
- la taille de l’objectif peut parfois être un obstacle près du sol
- à moins de 1 cm le sujet bloque la lumière
- il ne faudra pas trop bouger (un trépied pourra aider)
Je ne conseillerai donc cet objectif qu’au spécialiste de la macro recherchant des effets créatifs.

Hi Marc. I too have this lens and have not experience that centre softness as your image of your books, Several other testers including ePhozine remarked how good the centre sharpness this lens gives. I have a feeling it depends on luck as what you get from individual copies of this lens. I found the shift on my copy is rubbish on the a7rii but fine on my nex7. on the former I have to remove the hood as this appears in the image and even then I get very bad vignettes, I also don’t like the fixed adapter and wish I got a Canon fitting to use with my metabones adapter instead.
