Thanks Samyang Benelux for lending me this Samyang 12mm F2.8 fisheye.

Note that, as the Sony E version was not in stock, I used the Canon one with the Sigma MC11 adaptor. As the lens is exactly the same for all mounts , below test will give same result as the native E mount version

1 Introduction

I am not a big fan of the fisheye effect , so when I had to test this lens I was not very enthusiast, however after having discovered that you can automatically convert the images taken to get a perfect rectilinear projection with an angle of view  of 180° I was thrilled. You will understand later in the review why!

The Samyang 12mm F2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye is offering a 180° angle of view diagonally on a full frame sensor with a stereographic projection that maintain angles  and the objects retain their general true shape even near the corner of the image.

The captured image has no black edge in the corners = full frame fisheye image

Je ne suis pas un grand fan de l’effet fisheye, donc je n’étais guère enthousiaste pour le test de cet objectif. Toutefois après avoir découvert que l’on pouvait automatiquement convertir l’image fisheye de cet objectif en un projection rectilinéaire de 180° , je me suis aperçu que j’avais un main un objectif assez exceptionnel. Le Samyang 12mm F2.8 ED AS NCS Fisheye offre un angle de vue de 180° sur la diagonale d’un capteur plein format et une projection dite stéréographique qui maintient les angles et respecte la forme générale des objects même sur les bords de l’image

L’image capturée n’a pas de coins noirs, elle couvre bien l’entièreté du capteur

The build construction is good, made of high quality plastic

There is an aperture ring with click, and a rubbered focus ring, that can be operated smoothly

Considering the very big depth of field : everything being sharp from 1m to infinity when doing the focus at 2m, manual focusing is a non issue with this lens

Vu la grande profondeur de champ tout sera net entre 1m et l’infini pour une mise au point à 2 mètres de distance même à F2.8

3 Defishing the fisheye

The best way to use this lens is to use a Fisheye plugin sold 25$ by Imadio.com

It is called Fisheye Hemi plugin and works with Lightroom or Photoshop : see here

• The Fisheye-Hemi Plug-In automaticaly remaps your fisheye images to minimize distortion and maximize the preservation of all image details.
• Fisheye-Hemi provides a more normal view of people by not distorting their faces and bodies, and straightens vertical lines.
• A rectilinear mapping like with Lightroom lens profile will discard approximately one third of the pixels  and distord your subject near the edges. The Fisheye-Hemi plugin uses almost all of the pixels.

In practice : 1 without correction / 2 with Lightroom lens profile / 3 with Hemi plugin

Le meilleur moyen d’utiliser cet objectif est d’acheter un plugin fisheye vendu 25$ par Imadio.com. Celui porte le doux nom de Fisheye-Hemi plugin et fonctionne soit avec Lightroom soit avec Photoshop. Vous le trouverez ici

• Le plugin corrige votre image fisheye avec un algorithme complexe en minimisant la distorsion et en maximisant la preservation des détails de l’image
• Le rendu final converse la proportion des objets et des personnes même sur les bords et rend les lignes verticales droites.
• Une projection rectilinéaire classique comme avec un profil de correction Lightroom supprimera environ 30% de l’image et déformera les sujets près des bords. Le plugin Hemi lui conserve la plupart des pixels

En pratique : 1 sans correction / 2 avec le profil d’objectif Lightroom / 3 avec le plugin Hemi

As you can see Lightroom is cropping a good third of the image, whereas the Fisheye-Hemi plugin preserve more than 90% of it

You really can preserve the 180% of view with non distorted people and object and straight line ! Quite fantastic !

If I compare with my Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G I can only get 122° angle of view for 2000 euros, here 180° for 450 euros + 25 $ plugin !

As you will also see from next chapter the sharpness quality of this lens is excellent

Comme vous pouvez le constatez Lightroom coupe un bon tiers de la photo alors que le plugin Fisheye-Hemi conserve plus de 90%  du cadre de celle-ci

On peut vraiment preserver l’angle de vue de 180%  et conserver les proportions des objets et personnes sur les bords et rendre les ligne verticales droites. Impressionnant !

Si je le compare avec mon Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G , je ne peux avoir qu’un angle de 122° pour 2000 euros, contre 180° for 450 euros + 25 $ plugin !

Comme vous pourrez le constater dans le chapitre suivant cette performance s’accompagne d’un très bon piqué

How to use the plugin in Lightroom

very simply do first all your exposure/color correction and then Export to Fisheye-Hemi plugin using the “full frame” option

You will see in section 5 Samples a full gallery of before and after images

Comment utiliser le plugin en Lightroom

Très simplement, faites d’abord toutes vos correction de luminosité, couleur puis Exporter en utilisant le plugin Fisheye-Hemi avec l’option Full frame

4 Optical performances / Performances optiques

4.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIII, the most demanding Sony sensor with 42 Mpix

• Centre : very good at f2.8 and become excellent from F4 up to F11, at F16 we start to see diffration
• Borders : good at F2.8, Very good at F5.6, Excellent at F8-F11 , diffraction starting at F16

An excellent performance !

Les tests on été effectué sur un A7RIII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix

• Centre: très bon à F2.8 , excellent de F4 à F11, puis la diffraction fait son apparition  à F16
• Bords : bon à F2.8 , Très bon à F5.6, Excellent de F8 à F11 , puis diffraction à F16

4.2 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations 

• Lens fall off is visible at F2.8 but quite reasonable and disapear at F4
• Lateral Chromatic aberrations could be present in the borders in some situations but easy to correct
• The flare distance is very good (I had no issues during my test shoots). This is quite important as with such angle of view you may often get the sun in your frame

4.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques 

• Le vignettage est visible à F2.8, mais bien maîtrisé et disparait vers F4
• Les aberrations chromatiques seront présentes sur les bords dans certaines occasions mais sont faciles à corriger en Lightroom
• La résistance au flare est très bonne ce qui est important avec un tel angle de vue car vous aurez souvent le soleil dans le cadre par journée ensoleillée

4.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• To get a blurry background with a ultra wide angle like this 12mm you need to be pretty damn close to your main subject. In those case at F2.8, the blur si quite pleasant and soft
• Bokeh balls are nice, but if you zoom in you will see some onions rings
• Color rendition is very good
• Pour avoir un fond flou il faut être très près de son sujet principal avec un tel ultra grand angle. Dans ce cas à pleine ouverture on obtient de beaux fonds flous assez doux
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont agréables mais on peut observer des tranches d’oignons en zoomant à 100%
• Le rendu des couleurs est très bon

6 Conclusion

The Samyang 12mm F2.8 Fisheye is really an exciting lens , very sharp , low lens fall off, flare resistant, capable of offering perfectly usage rectilinear 180° field of view for less than 500 euros with the Fisheye-Hemi plug-in

It term of field of view and price it beats hands down the

• Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G (122°)
• Laowa 12mm F2.8 Zero Distorsion (122°)
• Voigtländer 10mm F5.6 Heliar Hyper Wide Aspherical (130° diagonally)

A real gem to have for Architectural,  landscape and astrophotography works

6 Conclusion

Le Samyang 12mm F2.8 Fisheye est une optique jouissive, très piquée, avec peu de vignettage, pas de sensibilité au flare et capable de vous offrir après un petit tour de magie une projection rectiligne de 180° d’angle de vue tout cela pour moins de 500 euros y compris le Fisheye-Hemi plugin

en terme d’angle de vue et de prix , il bat à plate couture les
