[–]drcalmeacham 68 points69 points  (1 child)

If they ever evolve opposable thumbs, humanity is screwed.

[–]humpbackhuman[🍰] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Seems like killer whales have some very specific skills they pass on from one generation to the next; they also know how to flip a shark over so that it's kind of paralyzed. How do they know to do that? I guess they really pay attention when watching other whales hunt and copy them. But how often does a killer whale have to fight a shark?

[–]tidymaze 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Orcas love shark liver. Especially great white shark liver.

[–]Iamnotburgerking 0 points1 point  (4 children)

...no they don’t.

Orcas can kill great whites but this isn’t something they do on a regular basis.

[–]tidymaze 1 point2 points  (3 children)

[–]Iamnotburgerking -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

TLDR: just because an animal can and has done something doesn’t make it a common occurrence, unless we have evidence to prove otherwise.

Human beings can and have killed and eaten almost any animal, doesn’t mean we eat every animal on a regular basis. The same principle applies here. We know orcas can kill great whites, that’s not the same as orcas regularly eating great whites. And yes, plenty of online articles claim orcas regularly prey on great whites, but they’re rehashing the original sensationalistic claims without checking if this is something that actually happens all the time.

The people claiming orcas regularly kill and eat great whites are extrapolating from a very small sample size, nowhere near enough to justify that it happens regularly. The scientific method relies on something being a regular occurrence, and in this case, it’s not regular.

There are literally six recorded cases of orcas killing great whites in decades of observation (2 were isolated incidents off the US and Australia respectively, the rest took place within a short interval in South Africa). We have hundreds of documented for orcas preying on other animals, so this small sample size cannot be chalked up to “the ocean is big and we’re missing events”.

Especially since all of the orca populations involved have already been established as specializing on other marine mammals (different orca populations have different dietary specializations, which are passed down intergenerationally). South African orcas, for example, feed primarily on dolphins, and even though they did kill four great whites in a short timespan two years ago, this was the first and so far last time they actually did this. You can’t argue that they killed more great whites before or since 2017, because as far as we know from evidence, they stopped doing it as suddenly as they started.

The bottom line? Orcas are capable of killing great whites (it would be weirder if they weren’t, since orcas weigh three times as much and can simply manhandle the shark). But it’s rare for them to actually go and kill a great white. We don’t know why they haven’t killed more great whites, but they don’t. You may well ask why they don’t try to kill human beings more often.

[–]tidymaze 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You said, "No, they don't". That's an absolute statement. I was proving your absolute statement incorrect. Which I did. Now go find another hill to die on.

[–]Iamnotburgerking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

.....go and re-read what I wrote at the start of the argument. For that matter, re-read your own argument.

Your argument is that orcas “love” great white shark liver, which means you were arguing (or at least implying) that orcas regularly eat great whites. If you just said “orcas can kill great whites” I wouldn’t have issues, because that would be correct

I said from the outset that they don’t kill great whites regularly, not that it’s not possible for orcas to kill great whites. I never made an absolute statement arguing that they didn’t kill great whites at all.

You’re putting words into my mouth.

[–]Iamnotburgerking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “turn the shark over” thing is literally based on a sample size of one. Then people assumed they do it all the time despite the lack of evidence.

While there is one orca population (in the North Pacific) that does regularly eat sharks, they don’t appear to use this trick.

I'm a little surprised that's not a thing

r/natureismetal should suffice for now.

Awwww, they murdered it.

Killer “Waves”

[–]ThatDJgirl 19 points20 points  (0 children)

One minute you’re relaxing on an ice sheet.. and then, DEAD.

[–]ekaceerf 63 points64 points  (1 child)

Which part was the cute part? You barely even see an animal in this and the animals that are in it are killing another cute animal.

[–]Namornow 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They’re so incredibly smart

[–]porelamordelsol 20 points21 points  (3 children)

In that case, I just watched the probable death of this poor seal :/

[–]humpbackhuman[🍰] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Not probable. Definite.

[–]PandraPierva 2 points3 points  (1 child)

And it was probably delicious

[–]humpbackhuman[🍰] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not probably. Definitely.

[–]KTAK66 19 points20 points  (3 children)

Orcas are to op they need a nerf

[–]holydamien 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Aren’t waterparks nerf enough?

[–]terrih9123 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Yea but that could eventually patched out and who knows how the meta will change then

[–]GrgeousGeorge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are also being actively nerfed by boat faring human class players. The noise of the motors is being used to cause some pretty serious debuffs to marine class mammal hunting stats.

[–]Emlym 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Story time; I was paddle boarding and a group 3 of bottlenose dolphins did this to me - swam very quickly at me and then dove under my board almost knocking me off. I have never paddled so quickly in my life.

[–]Frostmourne_Hungers 11 points12 points  (1 child)

They had no intention to hurt you. They were probably messing around with you. Dolphins can be jerks sometimes.

[–]SomethingWithMittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what if they were paid to haze him by a nearvy shark?

[–]SuperVillainPresiden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they make another pass at you?

[–]humpbackhuman[🍰] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I would've been SO stoked to have been that close to wild dolphins!

[–]uralva 8 points9 points  (0 children)

R/awwtf

[–]Jevling 4 points5 points  (1 child)

This is why im more scared of orcas than sharks. These dudes be smart.

[–]SailnGame 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are no known instances of Orcas killing humans in the wild. I'd swim with them way before I swim with sharks

[–]Jim-Dread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one of the facts I picked up as a dad. My kid loves Octonauts.

I love orcas but I always feel bad for their prey.

[–]hamwaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is from BBC’s frozen planet, I watched it the other day. There is more to see, you should check it out.

[–]Tikatmar117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orcas tend to avoid crabeater seals because of their intelligence. They're almost always able to outmaneuver a pod

[–]sol_siler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killer. Whales. Are. Terrifying.

[–]Strider794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel so bad for the creatures getting hunted in this situation, I love all of them. Of course the killer whales have to eat, but still, this seems like a bad way to go, when they're out of the water where they're usually safe

[–]MyCatsNameIsKenjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am glad this clip ended when it did....

[–]Satsuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They actually tried to do this to the camera crew as well

[–]FerrariBeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say I was wearing all black on that ice drift, would the orcas attempt the same thing or could they distinguish me from a seal? Once I'm in the water, would they bite first and ask questions later? I know Orcas don't normally attack humans, but this far into the arctic they hardly see humans..

[–]alexbrisker 0 points1 point  (0 children)
