English Schools Athletics Track and Field Cup 2022

It was fantastic for Emmanuel College to organise and host the English Schools Athletics Track and Field Cup on Tuesday at Monkton Stadium, after two years of Covid restrictions.
The Junior boys’ and girls’ teams performed well, being comprised only of Year 7 students with the absence of Year 8 due to examinations.  It gave the Year 7s a chance to experience a large-scale athletics competition for the first time, giving them a desire to compete again.
The Junior boys were placed fifth and the Junior Girls seventh.  Notable performances came from Jaydon Lawrence in the Shot, Georgina Herdman in the 1500m, and Charlotte Waterfield in the 800m.
The Inter boys’ and girls’ teams also performed well and enjoyed being back at a major athletics competition.  Both teams finished in fourth place.  Strong performances came from James Gray in the 1500m, equalling his personal best time, Eddie Allan in the 200m, and Isaac McIntosh in the Discus.
On the girls’ side, Millie Watson gained a great time in the 1500m, as well as Jessica Barker in the 200m.
Well done to all athletes who competed!

A Level Drama and Theatre Studies group create Case Closed, a thought-provoking, 'shockingly good' original drama.

As part of their A level, the Year 13 Drama and Theatre Studies group must devise their own 20-minute original drama.  Each year students amaze the staff team with their originality and inventiveness, and this year was no exception.  Case Closed was performed to a packed Drama Studio this week.  The company of eight actors performed ‘in the round’ and challenged their audience to question victim-blaming in sexual assault cases.  The cast worked to create a multitude of ‘cases’ that showed how we need to check our ‘subconscious bias’ when it comes to assault victims.  They also questioned why so many cases are closed without justice for victims.  It was an intelligent, well performed, multi-skilled performance that created much audience debate, discussion and high praise afterwards – let’s hope the exam board agrees.  Pictured above left to right: Sophia Beadle, Harry Sanderson, Grace Curry, Logan Turnbull, Natalie Ho, Emma Dawes, Hannah Waterfield and Isaac stamper.  Special thanks to Jegor Macuta, Chris Istrat and Jeffrey Tsang for their technical skills on lights, sound and AV.

LAMDA results hit the right note!

Year 13 students have achieved outstanding LAMDA results again this year.  Twenty students took Grade 8 Gold LAMDA exams in Public Speaking, Acting or Music Theatre and we are pleased to announce that 100% of students passed with a Merit or Distinction, with 85% of students achieving a Distinction.  This year we had seven students who took Grade 8 Musical Theatre and they all achieved a Distinction - they are pictured here with LAMDA examiner Mrs Meki.  The top results were Head Boy, Harry Sanderson, achieving 96/100 in Public Speaking, and Isaac Stamper with 96/100 in Musical Theatre.  A huge congratulations and theatrical ‘bravo’ to all of the Year 13 LAMDA students, many of whom have taken LAMDA exams each year since Year 8.  Years 10-12 are currently awaiting their results and Years 8-9 are preparing for exams in June.

Year 13 Leavers' Day

Thursday marked Year 13 Leavers’ Day.  It was an exceptionally memorable day, and the Year 13s demonstrated real maturity, affection and leadership.  They enjoyed time in each other’s company in the morning, a Leavers’ Speech from Mr McKenzie, and a BBQ in the sunshine.  We wish Year 13 all the best for their coming exams; they are welcome to come into College as much as they need to get help and support with their revision.

Footballers through to the semis

Last Thursday, the Year 8 and Year 9 boys’ football teams were both victorious in their Gateshead Schools Cup Quarter-Final matches against Kingsmeadow School and now progress to the semi-finals.
Year 8 won 6-2, and player of the match was Will Hancock.
Year 9 won 2-1, and the player of the match was Eddie Allan.
Mr Foster would like to congratulate both teams for their exemplary attitude and effort – they were a credit to the school!

Swimmer sets new PBs in regional competition

For the last two weekends, Jessica Jobson (Year 8) has been down in Leeds, swimming against competitors from across the North East.  She achieved some superb results against fellow 13-year-olds, got seven qualifying times, and set some new personal best times, too.  On the first weekend, Jessica finished 25th in the 200m freestyle, 20th in the 50m freestyle and 10th in the 800m freestyle.  On the second weekend, Jessica competing in the 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, and 200m individual medley, in which she finished 16th.  Congratulations, Jessica!

Young basketball player chosen to represent North East

Congratulations to Finn Thind (Year 7), who has been selected to represent the North East in the Aspire Basketball England programme, which provides quality coaching for talented 11-15-year-olds.  He will be attending a training camp at the end of this month, and we wish him every success as he pursues his passion for basketball.
