The victim in an I-75 shooting has died, sparking homicide investigation

A man who was shot on Interstate 75 near Alico Road in December has died, authorities said. 

Ronald Green, 30, of Lehigh Acres, was taken to the hospital after he was struck by gunfire on the interstate on Dec. 16. On Thursday he died from his injuries, according to a Lee County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The investigation, which has remained open and active since the incident, is now a homicide investigation.There have been no details given about who shot Green or why.

A car involved in a shooting incident along I-75 Sunday remains in the media between Corkscrew and Alico roads in the freeway's southbound lanes. The shooting forced those lanes to be closed between Corkscrew and Alico roads as units from the Lee County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Highway Patrol carried out an investigation.

Green had a criminal record for several low-level offenses such as marijuana possession. He also had a 2006 battery charge. Authorities could not confirm whether he may have been targeted. 

The shooting forced the southbound lanes to be closed between Corkscrew and Alico roads for about 10 hours that day and an hour the next day as law enforcement searched for evidence.
