the Opelika Center for the Performing Arts

Join us for the Performance Series AT the Opelika Center for the Performing Arts, an 1150-seat hall WHICH HAS hostED OVER twenty international orchestras.

The Opelika Center for the Performing Arts has hosted over twenty international orchestras including The National Symphony Orchestra and the Alabama Symphony, fifty nationally touring Broadway productions including “Annie,” “In the Heights,” and “South Pacific“, nine performances of the New York City Opera National Company, twenty-one major ballet and dance companies including Paul Taylor Dance Company  and David Parsons Dance, and twenty-one jazz celebrities and popular entertainers including Shirley Horn,  John PizarelliRoseanne Cash, and The 5 Browns.

For nearly thirty years, the Opelika Center for the Performing Arts has been the place where audiences experience the world’s finest artists and musicians.  Some of the visiting artists and guests such as Michael Kaiser, President of the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater  in 1992 and former President of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts  counts the company's performance in the hall as one of the most memorable in their careers.

The most moving of all the tour dates I experienced at Ailey was not in a major world capital but in Opelika, Alabama. We performed in a high school auditorium…the audience was remarkably diverse, half black and half white. After the show, most of the audience (and the company and crew) headed to Denny’s for ice cream and pie. The spirit of excitement and fellowship in the restaurant was remarkable. I have to believe that Alvin was smiling down upon us all and saying, ‘This is what I want my company to do.’
