Sports Stories to follow in 2019
By Andy Dolich
|
Here are some sports stories that are sure to be front and center in the coming months. I'll be looking to see what happens as we enter another sports year in the always crammed calendar of big time events in Northern California.
1. The College Football Championship will be played at Levi's Stadium on Jan. 7 with a number of community-based celebrations in San Jose. Will it be a major success? Who will be the #1 team in college football? Alabama or Clemson?
2. Does Jimmy G automatically regain his position as franchise's savior and Cover Boy?
3. Will there be a pro team championship parade in the Bay Area in 2019? What city will be lucky enough to host it?
4. The Golden State Warriors continue the mega money process of selling their new Chase Center in San Francisco to fans and corporate partners. Once the building opens, will the Warriors' magic created in the Roaracle continue unabated in Chase Center?
5. We live in a world where sports venues have become targets. How do authorities effectively create secure fan environments without taking away the openness of our sporting events and venues? Are those drones or security seagulls?
6. Ongoing traumatic brain injury and CTE fallout continues in all contact sports. The player participation pipeline is the growth engine of sports. As science and medicine improves on diagnosing head injuries, every family associated with constant contact sports will be monitoring the risk/reward of their children's participation.
7. The Oakland A's new ballpark location at Howard Terminal is moving forward with significant questions still unanswered. A's fans will be enjoying games at the Oakland Alameda County Coliseum at least until 2023 as the team continues to be "Rooted in Oakland."
8. Vegas Baby! The Silver and Black are building their $2 billion dollar domed stadium in Sin City. How will the Oakland Raiders' re-energize the franchise after a terrible season, questionable front office player moves and the ongoing Raiders of the Lost Park saga of where they will play in 2019. Throw in the City of Oakland's lawsuit against the Raiders and the NFL to keep the pot boiling.

| The FCFL launches soon in Las Vegas |
|
9. Will the Warriors be Boogie-ing to the NBA Finals when DeMarcus Cousins makes his eagerly anticipated debut for the Warriors?
10. Players, coaches. league officials will continue taking public positions on societal, political and workplace issues. Active involvement in social causes will increase in 2019.
11. Three new professional football leagues will be launching to compete with the NFL. The AAF (Alliance of American Football) on Saturday, Feb. 9 and Pacific Pro. The XFL, financed by the WWE's Vince McMahon, kicks off in the summer of 2020. Will any of them last more than one season?
12. The U.S. Open tees off at Pebble Beach on June 13-16. Will Tiger mania be on the prowl?
13. A Steph Curry-hosted PGA event is expected to take place in September as part of the fall portion of the 2019-20 golf season at San Francisco's Lake Merced course.
14. Kyler Murray -- will he be grabbing a baseball mitt or a football helmet as the current Heisman Trophy winner and A's draft pick?
15. ESports is growing at an amazing pace around the world.
16. Cord-cutters are now being joined by cord-never fans and plugging into new methods of consuming sports. This generation is spending spend more time and money looking down than up when they go to a live sporting event or will they just bypass the event altogether?
17. NFL draft: How many players from Bay Area schools will be selected to move on? How high will Stanford's Bryce Love go after coming back for his senior year? Who will the 49ers and Raiders be focusing on?
18. The NCAA men's basketball rounds (1 and 2) are being held in the SAP Center March 22-24. Will we see any local fives?
19. Launch of the FCFL, the first ever Fan Controlled Professional League where fans make every decision, including real time play calling, kicks off in Las Vegas this summer with eight teams. Joe Montana, Richard Sherman and Marshawn Lynch are all involved in key roles in this innovative indoor football league.
20. Women's World Cup begins in France in June. Will the USA defend the Cup they won in 2015?
21. You can bet on it. The growth of legalized betting on sports events in the USA will continue to be defined by Federal and State legislators, along with leagues teams, gaming companies, players associations and gamblers.
Happy New Year!

Cheez-It Bowl -- Cal Bears 7 vs. TCU Horned Frogs 10, OT

|
One of the few offensive highlights was a 33-yard reception by Cal's Jordan Duncan (2) who juggled the ball over several yards before securing the catch and hitting the turf. Cal lost a tense, defensive struggle to TCU in overtime, 10-7, and finished the season with a 7-6 record.

Sports Prep Star -- Carter Mahaney
Campolindo-Moraga -- Basketball -- Junior
Thanks to the efforts of Carter Mahaney and his younger brother, Aiden, Campolindo orchestrated what may have been the biggest upset in NorCal basketball to date this season. Carter scored the go-ahead basket and finished with a game-high 22 points as Campolindo defeated NorCal No. 2 Modesto Christian, 63-60, in the semifinals of the Modesto Christian's Crusaders Holiday Classic Tournament on Dec. 28. Aiden Mahaney, just a freshman, clinched the win with a pair of free throws. Campolindo's upset win couldn't quite carry them to the title, however. The Cougars fell to Weston Ranch-Stockton, 60-47, in the championship. They will begin 2019 with a 9-4 record. Photo credit: Jean-Paul Toshiro.

Who are the real Warriors? The answer to that question may not reveal itself until the playoffs. It has been said that good things come in threes--for the Warriors it is the shots that count for three points that have defined their essence, their feng shui, as it were--the goal of which is to situate the human-built environment on spots with good qi, an imagined form of energy. The perfect spot, or in the case of the Warriors, the perfect shot, is a location and an axis in time. But it is worth noting here that not-so-good things come in threes as well. For the Warriors, despite all their success, that axiom seems to be holding true. What are those three things?
1. Roster reality
A. The bench is awful; there is no depth, scoring or speed. Andre and Sean are long in the tooth and slower afoot. Jonas Jerebko is a nice player, but he is a journeyman. Quinn Cook is one-dimensional and a defensive liability. And there's a reason that the hustling Alfonso McKinnie was in the G league for five years.
B. They have no center; we have seen what skilled big men can do to Kevon Looney. Jordan Bell is not yet an NBA player; he cannot score. We better hope that when DeMarcus Cousins arrives, he will be at least half of his former self.
C. The league is younger and faster; the gap between the Dubs and all the rest has narrowed. Teams that were once defeated before they took the court against the Warriors are now unintimidated and confident.
2. Mental and physical fatigue
A. Complacency; it's not easy to get up for every game, and opponents have them circled on their calendar. The bizarre overtime debacle Thursday against Portland was one of the worst regular-season losses of the Steve Kerr era.
B. A tendency to be sloppy; despite bouncing back nicely Saturday, they have appeared at times arrogant, unfocused and even entitled.
C. Minutes; the four horsemen of the all-star-caylpse are still in their prime, but their minutes are up because of the lack of bench productivity. Come playoff time, that could present a problem. Klay Thompson throughout his career has struggled with consistency and clutch shooting; hopefully his 32-point effort Saturday is a breakout game--we'll see. Draymond Green must be getting tired of guarding five guys every game, but his presence is essential; he logged a +27 while on the court Saturday. Super-Steph is surely sore from getting mugged constantly. Fortunately, Kevin Durant's consistency has been a godsend.
3. Karma
Okay, please put away the "gimme a break with that spiritual New Age crap." The Warriors, in case anyone forgets, will not be playing in Oakland next season. Rather, they will be holding forth in a veritable edifice of avarice--a palace of greed named after a bank. When Lacob and Guber purchased the team on the cheap in 2010, it was not about titles; it was about tech money, skyboxes, and abandoning the most loyal fans in the NBA for the gold coast of San Francisco. If the Warriors don't win one at the Chase Center, well, you know--karma's a bitch.
Yes, Virginia, bad things come in threes. But so do good things. The three championships were a serendipitous by-product of a trio of smart hires; West, Myers and Kerr. But don't overlook these three things: Larry Riley's vision to draft Steph; the June 2016 losing locker room text by Draymond; and the apres-Hamptons Five visit phone call from Jerry West, both placed to Kevin Durant. Look at the bright side. Four years has yielded four finals and three rings. Remember how far this team has come. We have witnessed a complete, 180-degree turnaround, from the laughing-stock of the NBA--arguably the most dysfunctional franchise in pro sports--to a trailblazing organization, one of the all-time great teams. That last part is what keeps me positive and away from the ledge. You see, for those of us who wandered in the wilderness for forty years, the Golden State Warriors are playing with house money. And when April 15 arrives, if our all-star five is suited up, my money is still on them to take it to the house.
* * *
From 2000-2005 I wrote a column for the late great Oakland Athletics Fan Coalition (OAFC) entitled Elman Swings,
a play on the fact that I'm a musician. Some of you may remember the OAFC, an East Bay organization that at its peak had several thousand members devoted to keeping the A's in Oakland and guess what? They've succeeded. Perhaps one or two of you might remember my articles (more like rants) about baseball and society. So when the Ultimate Sports Guide asked me to compose regular screeds for this weekly blast called Outlaw's Outtakes, how could I say "No?" ('Outlaw' is their nickname for me.) -- Pete Elman
