On Poetry Day, we celebrate the power of words. Words are especially important right now in these fraught times. They give shape to our experience and help shift perspectives. The students’ words in this poetry collection give shape to the difficulty of this challenging time, with notes of hope, despair&nbsp;and humour. Sincere thanks to the students who contributed, and the English and Irish teachers who spread the word, collected poems and edited them. &nbsp; Hold fast. As many of you mentioned in your poems, we’re all in this together. This too shall pass. N. These Days Back then, it was the Black Death Black spots, red vomit ‘Ring-around-the rosies’&nbsp; Atishoo-atishoo, and they all fell down Further on, it was AIDS The pandemic that left humanity in tatters Freddie was singing, Liberace was playing. Through the nineties, AIDS was the last Bohemian Rhapsody on the sheets. These days the coronavirus is in our midst Lock-down for every school,&nbsp; Quarantine for almost every family in the world Every major competition cancelled It’s going to be a long recovery. - Nathan Ó Dáibhín, 6T

These Days These quarantine days have me worn out, I just want to go for a kick about, These days should be spent going out to play, But instead they’re spent sitting in all day. Typical that we can't go out when it’s nice and warm, Considering when we could all there was was rain and storm, I just can't wait for all of this to be done, So me and my friends can go out and have fun. These Days As I sit upon my wooden throne, every pen stroke makes me groan, my will is weak, my mind does roam, as I read my umpteenth tome. I think of men like Orwell, inside my rich man’s prison cell; of how their expectations fell and how, each day, their dreams’ bells knell. Their dreams of sleek and polished chrome, alien life and massive domes. For their dreams I do attone, but alas, these days we stay at home. - Dónal Ó Dochartaigh, 3C

These Days Unity, but not hand in hand, This country had to take a different stand, Times they are changing And we are living a new normality. Self isolation to keep down the fatality. Frontline workers going above and beyond, Even travelling from across the pond. It may sound simple, such an easy task. Wash hands, stay indoors is what the government ask. So from the isle of 1000 welcomes who would greet with open arms, Now it has to stop and put on hold Our Irish charms. It’s not forever this disease But let’s stop it bringing us to our knees. Perseverance Theses days are not the same, not normal like they used to be. We’re given complete freedom,&nbsp; yet not enough to be free. No schedule to our time, no structure to our day, we cook and clean and work, yet this reality of ours feel like a play. I wonder if it will stop soon, I wonder if we’ll be alright. But there is no need to worry,&nbsp; we haven’t yet lost sight. These days the oceans are rising, the ice caps melting, the ozone only getting smaller and while the planet is trying to burn us out- like some sort of infection we’re still here squabbling amongst ourselves with wars and worries that don’t even matter while the light of humanity slowly gets snuffed out These days are the last days we have - Anaithnid

The Gates to Freedom You and I are exactly the same, what feels like months has been in fact weeks, and some days we, as humans share, similarities in the way we think. If you are like most people, you are leaning to the the side of boredom, unlike me who has unlocked the gate to happiness in this time. If you give me a chance, I shall change your mind, as to why you should think otherwise. You think how can i change your mind, when you are sure there is no light at the end of this tunnel, well I know you have worked your way down this rabbit hole of emotions and are stuck in your ways .&nbsp; Thinking what it was like to have freedom back in those days, celebrating birthdays&nbsp;taking a stroll in the park or simply reading a book, watching the waves come in .&nbsp;

I will not let you ponder upon these memories for too long, as you have new ones to come, sometime soon. Some of mine consist of making pillow forts and turning my room into an artist workshop when did that happen? You will not expect these memories when they come as they are usually created from the madness of what is happening around you.&nbsp; There are so many opportunities to come with this situation we are in, Trust me, soon enough, you shall no longer feel like you are a hamster running in its week to nowhere. These new memories shall fill your time, like bickering over why DC is better than Marvel or if a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable.

These days are miserable, Every news story is more troubling than the last. These days are about helping each other, Reaching out to those in need. These days are about connecting, Virtually when you cannot meet face to face. These days are never to be forgotten, Forever to be written in the history books. These days we’re angry, frightened and scared. All we want to know is that our loved ones are there. I want a hug and a cuddle. I want to see my grandmother and tell her how much I love her.&nbsp; I took for granted what I’d miss, my school, my friends and a walk on the beach. I feel crammed, I feel stuck. I want to run, but we can’t budge.&nbsp; We’ll all get through it, as safe as can be. Just hope for the time where happiness will be. Heartiest congratulations to everyone involved in this wonderful project. I commend the teachers who succeeded in inspiring so many students to take up the pen. There are more than 60 poems in this fascinating anthology and this illustrates the height of the feat which has been achieved by its editor, an Mháistreás Nic Con Ultaigh. All the students who wrote poems for Lá na Filíochta are worthy of the highest praise. Very well done to one and all! It is said that necessity is the mother of invention and there is no doubting that Coláiste Mhuire's students are both inventive and creative. It is evident from all the works in this collection that the special Coláiste Mhuire spirit prevails. These Days For the people who have stayed at home, I have been doing work, And playing games. I learned everyday about how responsible this life is And listened to my parents. That helped me through the crisis. Some met their shadows and began to think differently.
