Grace à Transcontinenta, distributeur Zeiss, j’ai pu tester le Zeiss Loxia 25mm F2.4

1 The Loxia Family

The Zeiss Loxia are a lens family with manual focus , it contains 5 lenses as of 2018 all tested here

• Zeiss Loxia 21mm F2.8
• Zeiss Loxia 25mm F2.4
• Zeiss Loxia 35mm F2
• Zeiss Loxia 50mm F2
• Zeiss Loxia 85mm F2.4

They share the following common specifications

• a full metal construction (including les s hood) of a very high quality
• dust and moisture resistant
• an engraved depth of field scale and focusing distance 
• an aperture ring, that allow to either have clicks for photos or than can vary silently on a continuous basis for video (see next chapter)
• a large focusing ring rotating by 90° , fluid with some resistance that allow for precise manual focus, this coupled with the automatic zoom and focus peaking from Sony 
• Even if it a manual lens, the exif are well transmitted to the cameras via the electronic contacts 

Doing manual focusing with any Loxia lens is a pleasure, moving the focusing ring , starts the zoom magnification , and the focus peaking helps to adjust  your focus, with great precision thanks to the well balanced level of dampening of the focusing ring 

1 La Famille Loxia /

Les Zeiss Loxia sont une famille d’objectifs à mise au point manuelle, elle comprend 5 objectifs en 2018, tous testé ici

• Zeiss Loxia 21mm F2.8
• Zeiss Loxia 25mm F2.4
• Zeiss Loxia 35mm F2
• Zeiss Loxia 50mm F2
• Zeiss Loxia 85mm F2.4

Ils ont tous les caractéristiques suivantes:

• une construction tout métallique (y compris le pare soleil) de très haute qualité
• une protection contre la poussière et l’humidité
• une échelle de profondeur de champ et de distance de mise au point
• une bague de sélection de l’ouverture avec la possibilité d’avoir des click (photos) ou de varier en continu sans bruit (video) – voir comment dans le chapitre suivant
• une bague de mise au point tournant sur 90°, fluide  mais avec assez de résistance pour autoriser une mise au point manuelle très précise et couplé automatiquement avec le grossissement de mise au point et le focus peaking des boitiers Sony
• Même si nous sommes en présence d’objectifs manuels , les exifs sont bien transmis au boitier grâce au contacts électroniques

Faire la mise au point avec un Loxia est un vrai plaisir. Dès qu’on touche la bague de mise au point, le boitier enclenche le Zoom de mise au point. Le focus peaking combiné avec l’amorti parfait de la bague de mise au point permet alors une mise au point très précise

1.2 Click (photos) / Declick videos

To switch between the photos mode (where the aperture can vary with a click by 1/3 IL) to video (with a quiet continuously varying aperture) you need to use a small key provided by Zeiss.

You willl need to turn an adjustment screw with a black dot by 180% on the bayonet surface. When the 2 dots are close to each other your are  in photo mode (click) when the 2 dots are apposite your are in video mode.

This means that you can’t switch from one mode to the other one without unmounting the lens , which some of the Sony Zeiss and Sony GM do allow (with a switch button on the barrel of the lens)

Pour passer du mode photos, où la bague d’ouverture varie par 1/3 IL avec un click, au mode vidéo, où la bague d’ouverture peut varier en continu sans bruit, Zeiss fournit une petite clé qui permet de faire pivoter de 180° une petite vis marquée d’un point noir sur le fut de l’objectif.

Quand les 2 points noir sont alignés on est en mode photo , quand les 2 points noirs sont opposés on est en mode vidéo.

Ce qui impose de devoir démonter l’objectif pour exécuter cette opération. Certains Sony Zeiss et GM, eux, ont en général un bouton sur le fut de l’objectif a cet effet.

3 Optical Performances / Performances Photos

3.1  Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix (see also full size sample : Zeiss Loxia 25mm F2.4)

• Centre : Excellent wide open up to F8, little loss at F11 and diffraction as of F16 (still very good)
• Corners : Very good at F2.4, Excellent at F4 up to F11, diffraction as of F16

an Excellent performance and a very consistent lens

Les tests on été effectué sur un A7RIII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix (voir les photos en pleine résolution : Zeiss Loxia 25mm F2.4)

• Centre : Le piqué est excellent dè sua pleine ouverture et ce jusque F8, très légère baisse à F11 et diffraction à partir de F16 (mais toujours très bon)
• Coins : très bon à F2.4 et excellent de F4 à F11, diffraction à F16

Une excellente performance à la fois pour le piqué et pour l’homogénéité du piqué sur tout le champ

3.2 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations

• Lens Fall off is very visible wide open you need to close up to F5.6 to get it invisible
• Distorsion is very low
• CA are very low but I could get 1 photo where I saw them
• Resistance to flare is excellent
• The lens can produce nice 10 edges stars

There is a Lightroom Lens profile that can corrects automatically the lens fall off (nothing to correct for distorsion)

3.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / Distorsion

• Le vignettage est très présent à pleine ouverture et disparait à F5.6
• La distorsion est quasi nulle
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles , je n’ai eu qu’une seule photo où j’ai réussi à en produire
• La résistance au flare est excellente
• Le Loxia peut produire des effets d’étoiles à 10 branches (voir exemples)

Il y a un profil de correction Lightroom qui permet de corriger parfaitement le vignettage

3.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition

• A very nice  background blur very smooth
• Very good bokeh balls perfectly circular , a little bit oval on the edge , very soft inside the bokeh balls
• A very beautiful contrast and superb color rendition typical of the Zeiss lenses signature

3.3 Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• Un flou d’arrière plan très doux
• Des ronds de Bokeh parfaitement ronds , léger ovale sur les bords, très doux à l’intérieur des ronds
• Un très beau contraste , superbe rendu des couleurs , typique de la signature Zeiss

5 Video

In video , the Loxia provides very good results. The optional click less aperture allows to change it silently. The transition from sharp area to blur area are very pleasing

En vidéo , le Loxia donne de très bon résultats. Grâce a la possibilité d’avoir la bague de diaphragme sans clics on peut faire varier l’ouverture en silence. Les transitions des zones de netteté vers le flou d’arrière plan sont très agréables

6 Conclusion

The Loxia 25mm F2.4 is a real gem

• It is small, extremely well built, and easy to focus
• When you look at 100% at the pictures taken you rediscover what sharpness means!
• Distorsion is a non issue, CA is non existant in almost all situations, lens fall off (very present) is fully corrected in Lightroom
• Colors , contrast are superb with a typical Zeiss signature (that I like very much)
• Bokeh is very good for a wide angle

It will be the perfect choice for street photography, some landscape and even for some full body  pictures, both in photo and in video

Price is reasonable to me considering the extremely high quality

Some will complain about manual focusing , they could look then at the Zeiss Batis 25 F2 which is also excellent , but the Loxia is simply the best 25 I could test so far

For people looking for a faster aperture they could look at the new Sigma Art 24mm F1.4 that should be available in the course of 2018 but that will be much more bulky

6 Conclusion

Le Loxia 25mm F2.4 est une optique exceptionnelle

• Compacte, superbe qualité de fabrication , mise au point  manuelle facile et précises
• On prend une claque quand on regarde les résultats à 100% , on rédécouvre ce que piqué veut dire !
• La distorsion est quasi nulle, les aberrations chromatiques sont quasi absentes, le vignettage (important) est entièrement corrigé automatiquement en Lightroom
• Les couleurs et le contraste sont superbes , typique d’une optique Zeiss
• Le Bokeh est très bon pour un grand angle

Le Loxia sera l’optique de prédilection pour la photo de rue , du paysage ou même pour des portraits en pied , cela autant en photo que en vidéo

Le prix reste raisonnable au vu de la qualité exceptionnelle

Certains se plaindront de la mise au point manuelle , ils peuvent alors se diriger vers le  Zeiss Batis 25 F2 qui est aussi excellent, mais le Loxia est tout simplement le meilleur 25mm que j’ai pu tester à ce jour

Pour ceux recherchant une plus grande ouverture, ils peuvent regarder du côté du nouveau Sigma Art 24mm F1.4 qui devrait être dispo courant 2018 , mais qui sera beaucoup plus encombrant
