PlayStation deleting users' purchased TV shows without refunds

04 Dec 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

PlayStation is once again removing digital content that customers have purchased, this time all TV shows from Discovery, including Mythbusters and Shark Week.

After removing all purchased movies from Studio Canal in Germany and Austria without refunds in 2022, PlayStation is now removing all purchased – not rented – TV shows from Discovery, once again without refunding customers.

In total, 1318 shows are being deleted without refunds and without the option to download the shows before removal. A full list is included in the table at the bottom.

Here is PlayStation's message to its users:

Discovery Entitlements Affected Titles As of 31 December 2023, due to our content licensing arrangements with content providers, you will no longer be able to watch any of your previously purchased Discovery content and the content will be removed from your video library. We sincerely thank you for your continued support. Thank you, PlayStation Store

Digital purge coming to PS games?

This is, of course, hugely problematic and has reignited the ongoing debate surrounding digital purchases. The concern among users is also that the digital purge could soon extend beyond TV shows and movies to other types of content, perhaps even to Sony's extensive collection of PlayStation digital games purchased from the PlayStation store. Trust in digital purchases is waning. Before making an online purchase, it is crucial to ask yourself if you trust the company and if you can afford to lose the content in the future. If not, seek out alternatives or consider buying a physical disc instead.
