About this Course

The youth recreational swim team program (6-18 years) serves as an introduction to competitive swimming. The program emphasizes sportsmanship and the joy of the sport while maintaining an environment of cooperation, discipline, community and team spirit. Practices are held daily, M-F, with swim meets on Saturday morning. The season culminates with a city-wide championship meet. The championship meet spans two days; day one (Saturday) is trials and day two (Sunday) is finals. All swimmers and parents must review the OPRYD Summer Swim League Rule Book before participating in their first swim practice. Prerequisites: All swimmers must have completed level 4 of the Red Cross Learn to Swim curriculum or equivalent. Swimmers between the ages of 6-10 should be able to swim a minimum of three of the four competitive strokes: front crawl (freestyle), backstroke, butterfly or breaststroke for 25 yards without stopping. Swimmers between the ages of 11-18 must be able to swim a minimum of three of the four competitive strokes for 50 yards without stopping. Swim Team Coaches will determine if a swimmer is ready to join the Swim Team. Swim Team try outs for anyone wishing to join a Swim Team or those that have not taken swim lessons through the City of Oakland Parks and Recreation Youth Development Learn to Swim program will take place the first week of Swim Team practices.
