It’s fitting that Creamistry is decorated for Halloween. Billowing steam rolls up and over the countertops every time a worker makes ice cream. Since each cup is made-to-order, the service line resembles a spooky witch’s cauldron.

A California import with locations in Arizona and Texas, Creamistry just staked its first claim in Nevada. Expect additional local spots soon, because the “gimmick” is both entertaining and delicious. Begin by choosing a base. Options include the Signature Premium (16 percent butterfat), organic, sorbet, coconut or cashew (those last two are vegan). Then choose a flavor from a selection of fruit, nut butters, sugary cereals, cookies, cakes, coffee, tea or traditional flavors (chocolate, vanilla, mint, etc.). And then it’s time to make the ice cream.

The employee pours the flavor and the base into a mixer, blends it up and shoots it with nitrogen, which flash-freezes the concoction. The dessert is now so hard, it needs to be melted slightly so that’s pliable enough to scoop. Add some toppings or a fresh-baked waffle cup and voila!

The result is an ice cream that’s denser than traditional styles, since less churning means less air in the mix. I tried the Signature base with seasonal pumpkin spice flavoring, as well as the vegan cashew base with Fruity Pebbles. The first tasted like frozen pumpkin pie filling, while the latter tasted way too indulgent to be believably vegan. I was most amazed by how the quick-freeze allowed the cereal to remain crunchy, even though it was inside the ice cream. Consider it a year-round Halloween miracle.
